who likes newtones?

i put newtones on my guitar for the first time a couple days ago. i was extremely disappointed. i've only heard good things about these strings, about how high quality they are, how clear and distinct the sound is, and how well they carry intonation.

the moment i put them on i noticed that all volume and clarity was gone. i had DM alchemy's on before i changed, and those strings, after a week and half of playing for hours a day, still sounded AND looked new. the newtones sounded horrible right off the bat. not only did i lose volume and tone, they started RUSTING the day after. my fingers are GREEN. i cant get it off either. i resorted to cutting chunks of my calouses off to get rid of the green stains.

to those who enjoy and use newtones....did i do something wrong? anything to console me in this devastating disappointment?

edit. for those who havent heard of newtones, they're a UK made, handwound, roundcore string. normal factory made strings are hexagonal core, which is cheaper (i think?) and usually last longer. round core are supposed to make the sound clearer and make the strings feel softer to the finger.

well... i can't speak specifically about newtones... never tried them, but i will soon... but i've had packs of strings before that i KNOW how they should be, just not be right... and i think its a shelflife thing sometimes... i've had SPs rust out after only 5-6 hours of playing... and they usually go FAR beyond that for me.

Are you talking about Newtone Masterclass Phosphor Bronze? Because those are the strings I've used almost exclusively for the past 6 months on my Larrivee and they've been amazing. I've never had them rust, they've lasted twice as long as other uncoated strings, and never sounded dead. Very odd.

yea, those, the phospher bronze ones. hopefully it was just that specific pack, maybe they were sitting in the storage room too long. i was seriously disappointed.

i also bought an 80/20 pack. i'll put those on tonght when i get home, hopefully those will be better.

if not i'm gonna have to make a run to hte guitar store for some DM alchemys and start breaking them in, cuz i have to record a cd on sunday and i dont want brand new strings for the recording.

I think it was that set - I've been using Newtones for almost 2 years and I love them. You might want to try another set before you make your final decision.
