Members flamethrower Posted August 2, 2005 Members Posted August 2, 2005 I would like to score an acoustic. This guitar is generally for playing around the house (serenading my 9 month old daughter), and jamming with friends. I find the OM and 000 to be more comfortable than a dreadnaught. I am willing to spend about $650 max. I've narrowed down a few choices: a Blueridge 163 and a Larrivee OM03. My question is, which is the better guitar? The 163 is a rosewood back and side, OM03 is mahogany. (In fact, I could get an all mahogany 03. Is this better than the spruce top?) Lastly, I have to mention, I like the Martin sound, and I have somewhat smallish hands for my height. So, any suggestion or info would be appreciated. Thanks.
Members daklander Posted August 2, 2005 Members Posted August 2, 2005 FWIW... To my ears the Mahogony is a bit brighter sounding wood. If I were to go that way I would spec a spruce top to soften it up a bit. I like the sound of a Rosewood bodied guitar.I had a Guild Mahogony bodied guitar and, again to my ears, it was more honky in the mid range than any of my other acoustics. (Same brand and size strings.) The Blueridges are nice guitars but I think you'll find the setup to be fairly poor so if you go that way, have it properly set up. Overall, I love most of the Larrivee guitars I've had the pleasure to play.
Members guit30 Posted August 3, 2005 Members Posted August 3, 2005 Blueridge Br-163 is better in my opinion

Members squealie Posted August 4, 2005 Members Posted August 4, 2005 I love my Larrivee. One of the best guitar purchases I've ever made.
Members Norm66 Posted August 5, 2005 Members Posted August 5, 2005 I'd go with a Larrivee any day over a Blueridge. Higher quality build, and developing a reputation as the next "big thing"--acoustic lovers all over are taking note. Expect Larrivee prices to rise in the near future as they become better known, and played by more "famous" people. BR's are Chinese imports, and there have been some QC issues with them-especially the tuning machines, and the fact that the headstocks are so small on some models, the wound E and A strings rub at the tuning posts. Plus BR offers a 1 year Warrantee. Not real great IMHO
Members guit30 Posted August 6, 2005 Members Posted August 6, 2005 I played A Larrivee OM-03 at a local store, honestly, did not like this guitar, They wanted likr $795 for it or close to that. The fretwork near the top of the neckwas very poor and I wasn't crazy bout the wider nut 1 3/4 , the tone was niceJim
