Members david henman Posted August 22, 2005 Members Posted August 22, 2005 ...elixir doesn't. at least, not their acoustic strings. does anyone know which manufacturer does, and on which sets? thanks! -davidtoronto
Members solitaire Posted August 22, 2005 Members Posted August 22, 2005 Depends what you mean by "coat". The unwound strings are never coated with polymeers or the sonically favourable shellcoating. It's the gaps in the wound wire that clogs up and makes the string go dull. The DMS for one has metal plated plain strings in all their sets. Metal plating is usually nickel, silver or copper. Also DMS treats their strings with anticorrosive solutions as a standard.

Why are you asking, since you seem to find out these things for your-self? That might be so (I'm not currently to date with these coating procedures), but there is no point in coating plain strings. Polymeers kill the tone and like I said: plain strings doesn't clogg.

Exactly, that's why I don't understand why the EXP's and the DM Alchemy's are coated before they're wound. Gunk will still get in the winding gap so they will be affected by the coating AND by the gunk. Doesn't seem like much thought went into those strings.
Members woody b Posted August 22, 2005 Members Posted August 22, 2005 DR Extra life's have all six strings coated. I've never used them so I can't comment on their tone.DR Extra life strings at just strings
Members daklander Posted August 22, 2005 Members Posted August 22, 2005 I believe the d'Adarrio EXP sets I've tried had all strings coated. At least those uncoated strings tended to cut my fingers because they were so slick.

Electric guitar strings work different than acoustic guitar strings. Electrics rely on a magnetic pickup to produce the tone. Acoustics rely on the interaction of the string and the soundboard. A coated unwound string would kill the tone on an acoustic whereas it wouldn't be so much of an issue with electrics. For what it's worth, the DR coated strings sounded pretty dead when I tried 'em. Try spraying some pledge into a rag. Run the rag up and down the length of the strings "Coating" the unwound strings.
