Members •• Posted September 11, 2005 Members Posted September 11, 2005 I'm in the market for replacement acoustic for my thrashed Yamaha FG-75.I like the orchestral body size; don't like D-bodies as much as 0, 00, 000, OM.I need a guitar that will project well , stand up to rock's loud, rhythmic strumming, with a decent bass tone and a nice ring in the upper registers.Am I asking too much?Anybody have any suggestions?Around $1000 or less? (preferably less, but willing to pay for the right instrument)
Members JasmineTea Posted September 11, 2005 Members Posted September 11, 2005 Does it need to be electric too?
Members •• Posted September 11, 2005 Author Members Posted September 11, 2005 Nope. Acoustic only.
Members JasmineTea Posted September 11, 2005 Members Posted September 11, 2005 Larrivee OM-03R Martin OM-16gt Should be able to find either of these under $900. They have 1-3/4'' wide nut, mabey you want something slimmer. Click around at both sites, mabey there is something you'd prefer. There's a few other good Martins and Larrivees that come in under a grand. I have the Larrivee like the one in the link, it's working well for me. Also have a couple reasonably priced Martins.
Members Kap'n Posted September 11, 2005 Members Posted September 11, 2005 I was going to say Larrivee OM-05, but they might be a little out of the range. I used mine for "thrash acoustic duo" for years.
Members •• Posted September 11, 2005 Author Members Posted September 11, 2005 Thanks. I did look at the OM16GT and OM3 previously. They look pretty nice. The HC user reviews mentioned the sound being a little thin, so that's why I was wondering if any owners thought these guitars could cut it for regular gigging. Both in terms of volume and bass response, as well as durability.
Members JasmineTea Posted September 11, 2005 Members Posted September 11, 2005 For gigging I suggest something with electronics. Don't have any recomendations in that department. Mics are harder to work with.
Members •• Posted September 11, 2005 Author Members Posted September 11, 2005 Thanks JT. I'd prefer a true acoustic as opposed to one with built-in electrics... call me old fashioned (because I am).I'd probably end up using a removabl P/U or instrument mic for the gigs. I like to record my acoustic tracks with a mic to get some room ambience, so a straight acoustic is best for me.The Martin is looking pretty good. It might be worth it to spring for the extra bucks and get the OM21. I'll try to find a store where I can do a side-by-side comparison.
Members JasmineTea Posted September 11, 2005 Members Posted September 11, 2005 For recording I use mics only. Have been hitting some open mics lately and find that pups are a lot easier to control, mics are unpredictable. One pup I heard that sounds realy good is K&K. I'm still looking around for a pup but so far it's the best. good luck dude.
