Okay..It's obvious from damn near every post I've made that I'm infatuated with Dean Guitars. And I now think I found my perfect guitar.

For just $250, I'm now the proud owner of a Dean Andes Exotica. You know..The one made of Andes Rosewood. It looks killer sweet, and it has a solid Dean case to go along with it.

Did I get a steal, or what? Sure, I went $50 over budget, but I think I did great, and I actually feel no buyer's remourse as I do with almost anything I purchase for over $10.

I made that post with 30 seconds to go on the ebay auction. Refreshed the page and someone outbid me. So I went up to $300. I won for 1 second. At 5 seconds left, he bid up again. Bastard. I really thought I had a bargain.

But the search didn't end there. I ended up with an Oscar Schmidt OG10CE last night for $129.

Cheap? Yes.
Real wood? Yes.
Better Sound W/Age? Hopefully.

I played this guitar at a shop but it cost $279 so I decided to forget about it. It has a pretty rich tone for a thinbody, but it's not as loud as the Dean. It's got a good waranty, so I'll be happy with this until I get a better guitar 10 years down the road.

lol - that's pretty funny.... :) you probably shouldn't be posting here on the forums about a guitar you haven't won yet.....ESPECIALLY when there's only a few seconds left to get your winning bid in.... lol

Oh, well :) better luck next time - lol

p.s. the payment part might fall through, and it could be relisted... happens quite a bit... if that's any condolence, you seemed to be pretty pumped about that guitar.

lol - that's funny, needed that laugh :)

Needless to say, I was pissed. I already emailed the seller and said I'll take it for the original $250 if the other guy doesn't pay.

I've had that happen before, but never in under the last 30 seconds. Usually they do a bid that's way too good about 2 minutes before closing, not waiting until under 30 seconds. I'm just happy I bid him up over $300. The only other purchases that bidder had made were for a $58 dollar Fender and a used Mel book for $5. I seriously doubt he intended it to go from $190 (my bid) to over $300 right before his eyes. What a turd.

Well, he probably had that $300.00 bid, or even higher already placed and yours just kicked in the proxy raise.

You shouldn't be too pissed about it. It was apparently more than you were willing to pay anyway so no loss.
A suggestion...In the future do one of two things. Either place your maximum bid at the time you see the thing you're interested in or, keep track of the ending time, watching the pricing. Then, as the auction is getting close set your maximum bid and submit it at the latest possible time. On dialup you're likely to lose more than not if someone else is working it because you'll have to submit at about the 30 second mark, but on a fast broadband you can wait until the last 10 to 15 seconds to place the bid. There is still a chance that you will lose if a previous proxy bid is higher but if not it doesn't leave any time for anyone else to jump in with a higher bid.
If you're beat out, no big deal. Again, you've posted your maximum bid and if the item went for more than that you wouldn't have bought it anyway.

If yah's gonna play th' ebay game yah's gottsta know th' rulez.

That's the thing...I outbid him during the process with every bid..It'd say "You're the current high bidder" and I'd refresh, and he'd have bid...Etc.

No loss, really. And I was really only pissed for about a minute just because I really thought I had it. :)

I think I'll be happy with the OS I got. Should be here by Thursday, but I don't get to play with it until Christmas. Told my wife which luthier to take it to (a guy I always go to who charges $20 or so for pretty much everything. I'd kiss him if he didn't have that beard). So it should be just right for me come December.

In the mean time I still have that $1.00 guitar I got from ebay on Friday. Sure, it's a POS, but it'll do until I get the real thing.

See, that's where the proxy bidding comes in. The guy put a bid of at least $300.00 and then it incriments depending on what is there. So, if he was the first bidder and the starting bid was $50.00, his bid would show it. When you bid a higher amount the proxy automatically bid the minimum over your bid. It's not like a live auction so you can't treat it as such.

I always wait until the last few seconds to bid. I try to get as close to 1 as possible. Basically, the strategy is to determine the maximum amount you're willing to bid and post it as close to 1 second left as possible.

I've pissed off many a guitar player using this strategy. Yes it's sniping, but it's perfectly legal.

My Oscar Schmidt OG10CE arrived today. Gotta say, I'm very pleased. I tuned it up as best I could (don't have a tuner yet, and I've not tuned a guitar by ear since I was a teenager). It sounded pretty damned good, and it was great plugged in. Nice low action, but it might need to be raised a bit because I got a bit of buzzing.

Got it for a nice price because it has a yellowed spot on the binding on the back of the guitar. I seriously looked and looked for it, and when I finally saw the "blemish" I had a good laugh. It's hardly noticable, but it still knocked a good $100 from the price.

Unfortunately my mother-in-law took it home with her because it's gotta wait till Christmas.

From my 30 minutes with it, I'm gonna say I got a fine guitar.

...and in the end.... everything works out! Awsome! :)

Sounds like you got a pretty good deal. Blem guitars are always a good deal since most of the blems are not noticable. I'm not sure what you meant by 'real wood' - it's an all plywood guitar - just a better grade plywood. But I've played several 'all plywood' guitars that sounded real nice - and with a pickup in it you got a steal at that price. You are assured a good Christmas this way :D

See...Their page says "hardwood"...And it's "flamed" So I assumed it was maple, or something. Anyhow, I'm not worried about it anymore. It's not the Dean I wanted, but it's probably a bit better in the long run. It'll last until I'm ready to trade up.

Okay, I was wondering about it. Did a lot of googling and found many pages saying the "hardwood top" was ash. Many others saying it was flamed maple.

I emailed OS, but don't expect a reply for a few months.

Anyone out there in HC land no for sure?
