Members themusicdude Posted October 18, 2005 Members Posted October 18, 2005 I've been suing elixers for about 5 years, but all the recent hate for them has made me think about trying some new strings that would give me a bit of a darker sound. Main guitar is Dao. any suggestions? -am
Members gnurph Posted October 18, 2005 Members Posted October 18, 2005 I'm not sure what you mean by 'darker sound'... as in, you like dark music and that's the sound you want, or you want a sound that's not as bright. Personally, I like Dean Markley Blue Steels. I use them on my both electrics, my acoustic and my Bass. They just kick ass. Life span is like this: 1st day- very bright, 2nd day- mellowed down a bit, but very pure tone, 3rd - 23rd days- brightness still there, but they just sing!, 24th - 45th days- kinda like a 3 week life cycle of GHS boomers, 46th - on- reminds me of D'addarios, they might be developing some tarnish. That's based on my playing experience, playing 1 - 4 hours a day, 4 - 7 days a week. All depends on if I'm working mad crazy overtime or not, or if the wife and I are fighting or not.
Members LDF Posted October 18, 2005 Members Posted October 18, 2005 I too recommend the Blue Steels. I used to always use Elixir nanos until I tried the DM blue steels and I've never gone back.
Members Freeman Keller Posted October 18, 2005 Members Posted October 18, 2005 You might also try the new Elixer PB Nano's. I've just restrung two resonators and a Taylor with them. The PB's are definitely brighter than the old style Nano's so they may not be what you are looking for, but so far I certainly like them. On the reso's I can't tell a lot of difference in sound so I look for long life and less string noise - the Nanos have always been good for that.
Members onetubetone Posted October 18, 2005 Members Posted October 18, 2005 Sounds like a nice set of Newtone Masterclass PB's should be comin your way. Maurie's Music has them in stock.

ANYTHING is better than plastic coated strings. i actually liked how they sound especially on my fender, but am searching for a bit different tone now. getting a darker acoustic for xmas, but figured some strings would do in the interim. but i'll never completely get rid of my elixers! -am

That's not good news - I always thought the old Nanos were way too thin and bright sounding.I was hoping the PB's would have a more normal tone. Too bad. I use Poly's on my reso - great tone on a metal bodied guitar, sort of takes a little of the "klank" out of it.
Members gnurph Posted October 19, 2005 Members Posted October 19, 2005 Dark sound, as in mellow, try just about any flatwound string. I was quite impressed with the D'addario's Chromes flatwound strings I put on my Les Paul some months ago. They never lost tone, 2 1/2 months and no tarnish... I took them off 'cos I missed my Blue Steels. Also, zero fret noise, very sleek feeling. For acoustic. D'addario makes a Flat-Tops set, but I can't really vouch for them. They say 'semi flat surface' so it's not really flat top.
Members ddlingling Posted October 19, 2005 Members Posted October 19, 2005 i'm using DM alchemy's at the moment, reeally rich sounding set of strings. also last a long time, far longer than a normal set of strings for me (i have really acidic hands) i wanna try blue steels now too.
