So I'm an Acoustic Goon

I don't really know anything about them, other than occasionally I'm looking to incorporate the acoustic sound into my band. (Alternative, Electronic, Post Rock).

I know I should go play a bunch, but I guess I'm looking for some general guidance as to where I should start.

My friend has an ovation something or other, it's black, and while it looks and plays real nice, it sounds like plastic. It's a cheaper model, so maybe the more expensive ones will do me well?

It doesn't need to sound "pretty" but it needs to sound bold and powerful. If that makes sense?

Something I can play like an electric for a different texture is all, I guess.

Thanks,

Alex

i like doing things right the first time, but let's cap it at approximately 1000 used.

Oh, and I should mention that the plugged in sound (for performances) is more important than the natural resonant sound, in case that matters.

Then you should look for guitars that come stock with quality pups.

Search the forum for "a/e" or "acoustic electric" stuff along those lines. There's probly a thread about what you're looking for on every page.

The higher the gain levels you're playing at, the more you will want to take a look at instruments designed SPECIFICALLY for this purpose. You should have no problem coming in under your 1K goal.

The more "hollow" the guitar,ie, the larger the box and the lighter the woods used, the more problems you will have regarding feedback and uncontrolled resonances.

In otherwords, a world class classical guitar is NOT the right instrument for loud rock and roll.

IMHO, to get that acoustic "attack" and "presence" you will need to use a bit heavier string than you find on the typical electric guitar. Something else to consider....
