WD-40 treatment for steel strings

Somewhere I read that one of the initial uses for WD-40 was to prevent guitar string corrosion, so I tried it. I put a sheet of plastic between the frets and strings and I wiped a small rag which was slightly moistened with the stuff on the strings, top and bottom. All sorts of goo came off, onto the rag, black, green etc. I play with fingers so this stuff with strange physical properties builds up on the strings. It came off too. Then i wiped the strings with a dry cloth. The strings were not "like new" but they were a hell of a lot better than before and I will continue the treatments, probably every day or two. I have found that it's best to do this at the end of the playing for the day so that any residual WD has a chance to evaporate.

I bet this info was on the forum before, wasn't it?

Not quite like that. WD-40..hmm. Thought about putting a little house-hold-oil on them when they're new, hav'nt tried it yet.

Tried Orange Glo, no dice. Works good for cleaning the crud off the fretboard though. And it's got orange oil in it.

I used lemony pledge till I told a cabinet maker who I respected. He looked at me with such disdain, I never got over it.

But, with a sheet of newspaper between the strings and fretboard, what the heck, I'll try it.

I've used that stuff on my Guild... Always figured I would just take that little secret to my grave, but here it is.
