Members Clawhammer Posted November 8, 2005 Members Posted November 8, 2005 Need to turn ya'll onto these Beard setup Goldtone imports they are great and affordable:http://www.goldtone.com/products/cat_signature.asp?cat=beardThese are imports gtrs that are put together and setup by Paul Beard, with the guts ie cone, bridge, biscuit etc. being the quality Beard parts. These are very close to the expensive stuff in quality, yet almost as affordable as the johnson, fender, regal cheapies. I bought the PB-GRS steelbody biscuit bridge model after playing a bunch of resos. Price 675 bux and the tone just blew away the rest ... I liked it over the Nationals. The cheap imports, fender, regal, johnson, sounded tinny tiny next to this one. Im telling u the tone on this (to my ears) smokes even the Nationals I played. Its huge, thick, interesting, and the loudest acoustic gtr Ive ever heard, the Les Paul of acoustics. It will be a ball for single mic performance and acoustic jams. The dynamic range is huge, u can go from quiet to really loud as needed. The other cool thing about these is you get this reverb on singlenote lines when u leave the other string unmuted, as they ring sympathically into the cone. Then u can damp them and get a totally dry tone... Its like having a reverb switch on your acoustic. Im lovin this thing. The 12 fret neck is the one quirky thing, but the 12 fretters are supposed to have better tone ... and this one supports that theory.

Looks like a really nice alternative to 2K+ for a National or Dobro. I haven't been at all impressed by the Regal / Johnson / Fender / Deans that I've tried but these have a pretty good reputation. I personally prefer the 1-3/4 12 fret necks. One of my Dobros has a 1-11/16 14 fret neck and one has the 12 - it is much easier to play bottleneck on the wider flatter neck.
Members bjorn-fjord Posted November 8, 2005 Members Posted November 8, 2005 Whoa. National might have a case for a lawsuit. Those guitars are a little too close for comfort to Nationals IMO. Right down to the etching.
Members 54merk Posted November 8, 2005 Members Posted November 8, 2005 I did not realize that they expanded the line to metal bodied resos. They look very nice and the price is right if they are truly that good. Nice to finally have an alternative between the cheap ones and Nationals.
