What should I look for or expect in a $300 classical acoustic?

I noticed that Classicals don't always come with adjustable necks.

A lot of the don't ......lack of tension means the wood can take the stress.

key is a solid top......thats were the real tone begins, difference between a shoe box and a guitar.

I just bought a La Patrie for 269.00. Of all the guitars I looked at in that range it was the best sounding. Now serious players might laugh but it really sounds as good as more expensive instruments. so as a vetern Rocker trying to learn some new music it made a great intro guitar. The Lapatrie etude had a solid top and a trussrod. it's made by the godin people in CAN......good stuff at a low price

People swear by their La Patrie classicals. I've been looking for a sub-$300 nylon stringed guitar as well, and everyone seems to recommend the La Patrie. I've only found one place in Chicago that had one so I played it and it was an extremely nice guitar. It was the higher-end model, however, so it was a bit out of my price range.

Try to order one online if you can't find it in store.

Usually I don't like that idea but with La Patrie I would take a chance!

All the ones I tried were really nice!

Compared to other brands they sound good and are easily playable!

I'm lucky, I'm in Quebec and it is easy to get one!

Before I purchased my Norman B20 Folk I took a look at the La Patrie Etude and I remember asking the salesman if he had another one left: he told me he had 20 more in the backstore!

Thanks for all of the replies. I bought a La Patrie Etude. The volume on this classical is very good. The sound is excellent. I had some aprehension about the 2 in. wide neck and satin finish but both don't bother me at all. I'm primarily an electric guitar player but the neck didn't require that much of an adjustment. I think mine may be an earlier model as it has the fret board cut to match the sound hole. Some of the newer ones have the fret board haning over the sound hole.

Hey! Congrats!

It looks very good!

This will be probably my next purchase. Only in a few months, though!

Have fun with the new guitar!

la patrie's have a very low quality top. in fact, in some cases i'd prefer laminate.

if you have 300, i'd recommend something used if you have time to look around. but honestly, i think the logical progression of quality for a classical guitarist is:

$100 banged up beach guitar (with a reasonably straight neck)

$800 student model hand made. ie ramirez or amalio burguet.

$2500 - 4000 concert quality guitar for the professionals.

LaPatrie doesn't have a low quality top. That's such an out of context statement anyway. Low quality compared to what; a $3000 guitar? Ok, sure, it's low quality. Compared to other $300 guitars? No way. The guitar he got will serve him until he needs to step up to a $2000+ performance model. Remember, if you don't have anything nice to say.......

Excellent choice for the money! I stock all 3 models of LaPatrie and they and the Walden nylons I stock are my best sellers for full size, nylon guitars. The LaPatrie Motif is a Parlor sized nylon and it's volume is quite surprizing for it's size.

If you worry about the top just add a transparent scratch plate to it!

I would buy a La Patrie Etude without any hesitation! They sound good and people who own them for a while still like them very much!

A friend of mine has a classical guitar that looks pretty good with it's thick polyester finish... but it is unplayable and the sound is not even closed to the La Patrie Etude, plus, it costs much more $$.

Enjoy your new instrument! You did a great choice! If you want something better: be prepared to spend a lot more $$$ and then, I'm sure you'll still appreciate your La Patrie and you won't be affraid to carry it with you because if something happens to it it's not 1000$ - 2000$ that you'll lose!
