Members cwalsh Posted November 14, 2005 Members Posted November 14, 2005 Hey everyone I'm having some problems tuning my guitar. I have a CD that goes through each string with the proper sound..and I can tune it that way with no issues..but I also have a Seiko electronic tuner..brand new. Now when I use the auto mode and i pick the large string E ..the tuner shows C..and each string after that shows 2 notes below. If I tune my guitar so that the note showing on the tuner is the note on the guitar...it ends up being 2 notes off...eg..the big E will really be a G. What am i missing here..did i get a bad tuner.? Thanks
Members KATMAN Posted November 14, 2005 Members Posted November 14, 2005 Never had that problem, but then again I never used a chromatic tuner either. The tuner I use has the string listed like the guitar,E,A,D,G,B,E, then a three lights on it.One in the center which is green means it it dead on in tune, the one on the right and the left are red. Left is for flat and the right one is sharp.I've never had a problem in the five years I owned it,except for batteries.
Members cwalsh Posted November 14, 2005 Author Members Posted November 14, 2005 In auto mode...its just supposed to hear the note you play and give you a reading of how far off (flat - sharp) you are. ..so I can't figure out why its saying my low E is a C. If I manuall select E to tune..it just says its 2 notes off. This think is harder to learn than the guitar..is there a tuning forum anywhere..i need lessons.

There's another thread about junky tuners. I use a tuning fork to get the A in tune, tune the rest of the strings to the A, check the A with the fork again, and tweek the rest as needed. (I've been playing seriouse guitar for 30+ years, have never owned a tuner)
Members cwalsh Posted November 14, 2005 Author Members Posted November 14, 2005 K,,is there a key that I should be tuning it in..? I noticed that the Key of E was displayed on the readout..but C was being displayed when I picked the thick string. So I changed the key to C and now E displays for the low E string as it should. Goolllly! ...am I confused.
Members Ronaldo Posted November 14, 2005 Members Posted November 14, 2005 I had a seiko or a korg that did that. You have to make sure it is in guitar and not bass mode. Also on auto and not on manual. My tuner used to say the wrong note -- it's just a quirk. It actually tunes to the E even though it says C. It sometimes will all of the sudden jump to the E even though it's been saying C. What you have to do is tune the string to another and then you know it's in the ballpark, then even though tuner say's C or whatever, you'll know it is actually tuning it to the E. Sounds confusing, but my tuner used to do that. Also like someone said, they work much better when you hit the string only at the 12 fret b/c the harmonics screw with it otherwise.
Members 335clone Posted November 14, 2005 Members Posted November 14, 2005 There is another VERY long thread about this, but in escense, the guitar is a "C" instrument (no sharps or flats in EADGBE) in std tuning AKA 'E'. So C should get you an E. I won't even attempt to explain it.
