Looks like the Seagull is winning out on recommendations on here as a starter guitar for me. So now I have a few ?'s about the segulls.

I've been on there website. What is the difference in a Spruce top and Cedar top. I read somewhere that cedar didn't like to be strummed hard, is this true?

I've found muscians friend has the S6 cedar top, but haven't found a spruce top on any websites.

I'll probably be "wanting" to play acoustic versions of King's X, 311, Sevendust, etc. Nothing too heavy, but not elevator music either.

Which and where should I be looking?

I have the M6 Gloss. Supposedly the gloss finish is lighter and allows the guitar to resonate more. Looks great too. Mine sounds pretty good. It does have a slightly wider, chunky neck. I'm used to it now. Mine's 8 years old and has never given me any problems.

If you can afford the Seagull M6 go with it!!

The finish is going to be probably more durable than on the S6 and you will get mahoganny back and sides.

Between a cedar or a spruce top, only you can decide: go with what you prefer!

Personally, I have an S6 Folk (cedar top) AND a Norman B20 Folk (spruce top) and I love them both! You can't go wrong with Seagull or Norman or S&P!

I wanted a folk size but for a dreadnought I would pick up the M6 + gloss!! I just love it!! Too bad it is so big!

I think both are great. I have an M6 Spruce Gloss Top that I love. The local guitar shop has several S6 cedars that I like a lot also. I bought the M6 without having ever played one, but did so based on how much I liked the S models. The local store only had them with electronics at the time, and the price was high (in fact, they quoted me a higher price on the regular S models that was higher than I got the M6 for). I would have been just as happy buying the S6 as I was the M6. Guitars are like putters in golf. They all work, it is just a matter of what feels, looks, and sounds right to you (and fits your budget). Good luck, and let us know how it turns out for ya.

I think the M6 is worth the extra money, and on Elderly or MF, it should still be in your budget. I bought it with the understanding that it might be my last guitar, and unless I get really, really good, it will be. It's better than a starter guitar and should take you a long time to outgrow. Its finish is as good as any on any guitar.
I prefer spruce for durability and ever-improving sound. Seagulls should sound good right out of the box. On the M6, the finish won't stifle the top's opening up.
If you like the S series more, based on sound or feel, buy it. But if you want an instrument that will take you until you're prepared to shell out bigger bucks for an all-solid wood classic, get the M6.
But remember, Seagulls have shorter scale and wider nut. I happen to like that, be sure you do.
Happy playing.

Ok guys, got to a guitar shop today. I told the guy not to put anything in my hands over $500.

All I know is a G chord :( But, I played it on some Washburns, Takamines, Ibanez Artwood, and Seagull's.

The Tak, felt the most comfortable for my untrained hands.

BUT, The Seagull S6 cedar top sounded soooooo much better than anything else in that price range. I couldn't believe how much I liked the sound of it. I tried the M6 gloss and I thought spruce is what I wanted, but I just can't get the sound of that Cedar topped guitar out of my head :D

My only worry with buying the Seagull is the neck was massive compared to the Washburn and Tak. Ibanez was kinda in the middle. I could reach the G chord fine and since I've NEVER played guitar before I'm thinking if I learn on this thing It shouldn't be a problem.

And lastly, This was a local shop, family owned (like my business) and he priced me the S6 Cedar with hard shell case for $400 even with tax. Is this a good deal?
Sorry to be long winded, but I'm Really excited now:cool:

400$ with hard shell case, taxe(s) included: Yes it's a good deal!!!

I paid 369$CAD + 15% taxes for my S6 (cedar) Folk, 4 weeks ago!

I got mine with a gig bag + a strap button + a Dunlop trigger capo!

I'm small and the neck is just fine for me! If you like it, go with it!!

edit:

400$ CAD seems ok... in the USA I can't talk!

If the big neck is an issue, try the Simon & Patrick instead. All that said, I think the price is a little high for an S model. That is nearly what I paid for the M6 Gloss Spruce. Then again, it sounds like that guitar spoke to you, and that alone makes it worth the slight difference in price.

I'm gonna go back the first of the week with the guy that's gonna be giving me lessons and let him play some of the stuff I wanna learn.

For $500 US they had a M6 spruce with electronics with hard case.

I just really liked the tone of the cedar S6 better

the M6 sounds like a much better deal. Godin's selection of electronics should be pretty good. that, the case and a great guitar for $500? I'd take it.

Do you really need the built in electronics? Don't pay extra for something you don't need. If you're just starting out, you're a long way away from using those.
