Members brahmz118 Posted November 27, 2005 Members Posted November 27, 2005 This has been my guitar obsession for years now -- figuring out solo arrangements that include basslines and melodies, and inner lines / chords /harmonies when possible. One of my main inspirations is Steve King, whose Beatles arrangements are amazing. He's a Taylor artist and I went to see one of his workshops. A few things that he mentioned about his own technique: 1. He almost always has a barre down, to have access to any key anytime. Few if any open strings / chords. 2. He uses all 5 fingers in his right hand. 3. He is willing to take a piece at snail's pace to learn the sequence of intertwined verticals -- beat by beat until he can hear the separate parts. I had tried to do a guitar version of Riders on the Storm years ago but abandoned it because I didn't think my arrangement was good. I'm sure a really talented fingerstylist could work magic with it, but I just didn't find playing the layers (particularly the melody) very satisfying. Here's what I started. Probably won't finish it any time soon.Riders on the Storm|-------------------------|-------------------------||----------------------7--|-------7-----------------||-7-----7--9--------9-----|----------9--------9-----||-------------------------|-------------------------||----9-----9-----7--11-7--|----9-----9-----7--11-7--||-7-----10----7-----------|-7-----10----7-----------|..^.....^.....^.....^.......^.....^.....^.....^.....|-------------------------|-------------------------||----------------------7--|-------7-----------------||-7-----7--9--------9-----|----------9--------9-----||-------------------------|-------------------------||----9-----9-----7--11-7--|----9-----9-----7--11-7--||-7-----10----7-----------|-7-----10----7-----------|..^.....^.....^.....^.......^.....^.....^.....^.....|-7--7--10----7-----------|-------------------------||----------10----------7--|-------7-----------------||-7-----7--9--------9-----|----------9-(9)----9-----||-------------------------|-------------------------||----9-----9-----7--11-7--|----9-----9-----7--11-7--||-7-----10----7-----------|-7-----10----7-----------|..^.....^.....^.....^.......^.....^.....^.....^..... brahmz118
Members kwakatak Posted November 27, 2005 Members Posted November 27, 2005 A lot of classical, country and jazz-type music use this type of technique, but it sounds like you'd like to stick with rock music. In that case, for starters check out: Landslide - Fleetwood Mac Dust in the Wind - Kansas More than Words - Extreme Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton These are the songs I first started experimented fingerstyle with. If you don't feel challenged by these, then check out "Laurence Juber Plays the Beatles".
