Hi everyone,

A friend of mine would like to get his son an acoustic/electric for Christmas and he plans to spend around $200. What is the best choice? I have been playing for many years, but I really only know electrics, so any help would really be appreciated.

Your best bet is to go to a Guitar Center and see if they have one. Guitar Center and MF are buisness partners. But at $99,you relize it ain't going to be a Taylor. I've seen some Jasmines,Takamine knockoffs for $129,it is probably a better deal.

You can probably get an Art & Lutherie Folk model w/electronics for under $300....

Norman's entry level B15 is a cool starter guitar and you can get them with Fishman electronics

I think both are great beginner guitars....

I would suggest a Kona K1E.. they have great sound and are pretty cheap... you can get them on e-bay for around $150 maybe cheaper... also if something goes wrong you can send it in and Kona will fix it for free.. just a great buy overall

I was also think of SX (rondomusic). My friend bought one of their basses and it is really nice....can I expect the same quality in one of their acoustic/electrics? Thanks again!

Yes the Konas are sold on ebay... the "official" dealer is P-Hill... and yes you can definately expect the same quality as most other brands.. My friends play my signiture series Kona and cant believe I paid under $200 for it... I might add that they have all since bought a Kona

Hey I was about to post a similar thread!

My cousin is thinking about starting up and her mom asked me what to get her... (She is 15).. I recomend this Alvarez.. The main reason is because it is a folk sized body and when I started playing acoustic at age eleven I was frustrated because the thing was so damn big and I could not see the fretboard when using a strap.

I am thinking similar to Tito here. This is the kid's first guitar, so he really has no use for a pickup right now. You can get a little more guitar for the price if you skip the electronics for now. Maybe a Washburn D-10?

Forget about the electronic for now!
;)

I'll echo this, a better guitar will decrease frustration and increase enjoyment. Pickups and amps can always be added at another Christmas.
