I love my 314-CE L7. I especially like that the Fall Limiteds (2004 anyway) came from the factory setup with and for mediums. Great guitar.

I could be wrong (I certainly have been often enough to establish that). The spec's Taylor shows on their website for the L7 are for the dread (310) now that you mention it. It just seems the original Elixirs on mine seem heavier than lights. Again, I could be wrong.

Other than the type of wood on the side and backs, the 314/414 are very similiar. How is it you came to have one of each and do they sound that different to you?

The 414 doesn't have the ES or the cutaway, and it responds better to a slightly lighter attack. I use it for fingerpicking, and I've found that it sounds great as a lead acoustic as well as rhythm, although it sounds best on the mellow songs. I should point out that I initially looked past this model, but after playing a few, I couldn't say no to the deal I got. Its a great guitar for just chilling out and kicking back.

The blackwood on the 314ceL7 sounds considerably different, and it has the electronics and cutaway. The blackwood in the description on the taylor site (as well as others) listed it as having a sound similar to koa, but I didn't find this to be the case at all. The blackwood is very balanced, not boomy although it did have a nice bass tone to it. I love that guitar, it seems to respond to all things well. It was the first Taylor I bought, after the Baby Taylor I got a few years back.

I should also point out that the 400 series has a limited rosewood model this year, I bet you could find one for a really nice price.

You are right, the two are more similar than they are different, but I really like the GA body guitars, always have. Funny thing is, I also have the Larrivee L-03K. More bass than the blackwood, comparable with the 414 as far as tone.

I got the larrivee recently, mainly because it was too pretty for the price, and I had some spare cash. I bought it off of a touring musician that used it as a back-up. Said he never ended up needing it during tour. Its got a sweet B-Band A2.2 pickup that sounds amazing. The controls for it are mounted in the inside of the soundhole, so no holes! Unplugged, it really resembles the 414. More bassy than any other koa I've played, with the usual koa zing in the mids and treble.

If the Taylor website only lists the 400 series with Ovangkol wood, how do you request one with rosewood? I've never heard of Ovangkol, its long term wear and tear....etc. Little worried about that.

For what it is worth, I have a 314 (Sapele, a less expensive tone wood similar to mahogany) that was a gift from my wife. Great little fingerstyle guitar - I really like the wider neck. It is a much more mellow guitar than my Martin dread, better mids, but without the punch. I'm not real crazy about satin finished guitars so I did buff it to "semi gloss". Yes, it is solid wood (altho the splices in the neck are pretty obvious).

I would expect the 314 and 414 to sound different altho I haven't played a 414 (like comparing mahogany with rosewood). If you get a chance to A/B them I would be interested in your thoughts.

You might also want to lurk on the Acoustic Guitar forum - this used to be the Taylor forum until Bob pulled the plug on the name. Still a lot of Taylor folks over there

Aim for about 40% off list.

The taylor site has all the prices, including the 414-L10 rosewood. If you can't get that price at your store, PM me and I'll tell you where you can. They set-up the guitars for free too, and it's the full set-up.

I owned a 314 a few years back and remember it as a very nice sounding and playing guitar, although I couldnt get on with the satin finish on the back and sides.Recommended.:thu:

Spent an hour yesterday at a store called The 12th Fret in Toronto. Tried to count all the guitars there..stopped around 300..it was getting late. Anyways...played about 10 different Martins..Taylors..Larrivee..got in down to Taylor 314 or Larrrivee L-03r. ..what a decision. Leaning towrds the Larrivee..the sounds just seems to pop off the strings so much easier than anything else. Love that rosewood!
