Members SwingingPRS Posted December 10, 2005 Members Posted December 10, 2005 Hi!I've just tried a gibson sj-200...I'm in love... So after christmas I'm gonna buy me one, but there are many different ones...Can anyone help me out. I live in a place where the stores is rather small, so I'm gonna buy on the internet. What's the different between j-200 and sj-200? and is there some of the guitars that are better than others? I was thinking of paying about 2-3000 dollars... thanks,SwingingPRS
Members SwingingPRS Posted December 10, 2005 Author Members Posted December 10, 2005 I don't know the difference actually. ?? The one in production now is with maple back, sides and neck right? thanks,SwingingPRS
Members SwingingPRS Posted December 10, 2005 Author Members Posted December 10, 2005 Mostly strumming, but I variate a lot thow. Is the maple poor compared with the rosewood?
Members Rada Posted December 10, 2005 Members Posted December 10, 2005 Just my 2 cents..... I'd get the SJ-200 with the maple backs and sides, it's been something I've had my eye on for a while as well! It sounds amazing.... I never felt Gibson was very good at making guitars with rosewood backs and sides. Gibson will always be synonomous with Maple and Mahogany in my mind... Maple gives a great bright sound that's still very balanced God, I love Gibsons!!!
Members Alumitone Posted December 10, 2005 Members Posted December 10, 2005 Any Jumbo size Gibson has the J prefix. The SJ stand for Super Jumbo (not to be confused with Southern Jumbo), meaning the full 17" wide lower bout. I believe the J-200 and SJ-200 thing has to do with is it or is it not the reissue model of the Super Jumbo model, a size designation that originated in the early 1930s (with RW body btw) Got a J-100 a few years back when these were given more of a SJ-200 look with it MOP Crown inlays and stuff. Back then these were maple bodied and compared well with their higher end stuff. Gibson are currently at a high compared to their '70s low. An RW Super Jumbo could be a bit hefty at the low end but I have nothing against RW in a Gibby. BTW nice pic of that Bird's eye Jumbo! Edit: Had that been me I would have gone for the Pete Townsend sign. Very Gibsonesque yet it doesn't look like your standard J-200 + it comes with a great pickup installed.
Members 59refin Posted December 11, 2005 Members Posted December 11, 2005 SwingingPRS, I owned a '58 J-200 for a while and man, have those guitars come a long way. That was the muddiest acoustic I've ever owned. It was a gorgeous guitar but I just had to get rid of it because there was no clarity to the high end at all. The new SJ-200's are pretty punchy by comparison, you could certainly do worse than that. Not to thread swipe, but if you're a fan of jumbo guitars you owe it to yourself to play a Martin J-40. Every time I play one I want to cry they're so beatiful. BTW, J-40's are in the price range you mentioned.
Members hondro Posted December 11, 2005 Members Posted December 11, 2005 I wouldn't mind playing a J-200 but... not that I'm telling you to get this instead... I mean, j-200's are great guitars... but... a Martin HD-28... *dies*

I can't imagine buying a premium guitar (or any guitar, actually) without playing it first. Playing a bunch of guitars and buying the one that speaks to you is a beautiful thing.
Members SwingingPRS Posted December 11, 2005 Author Members Posted December 11, 2005 Thanks for all guys! I know, I gonna make a trip to a big city near christmas and try out guitars like never before! But is there any other types of guitar I should consider? I saw you mentioned Martin. SwingingPRS
Members Cldplytkmn Posted December 11, 2005 Members Posted December 11, 2005 i can't see myself ever owning a natural finish gibson... unless it was a vintage model... i say that to say, that the any of gibsons Js or SJs look stunning in sunburst.

But there's something about a gibson sunburst... mm. its all up to the player though. as for me? give me a J45rw or an advanced jumbo over an HD28 any day.
