Extra light strings appreciation thread!

Recently I wanted to try out some different strings,so I chose some D'Adderio EXP light gauge strings,.10-.47. I was really amazed by the tone and feel of my guitar. The play ability is super, and I tuned it standard for the first time in years. The guitar I put the light gauge strings is a Takamine EG-430SC. I was using John Pearse lights,.12-.54 and tuned the guitar a half step down. Two questions here,(1): Will the extra lights be ok on this guitar?,and(2): Does anybody else use extra light gauge strings on their guitars?

Heavier strings drive the top better. Light strings are easier to play. To me it's kind of like giving in to a temtation. They make me lazy, I don't have to work as hard, but they don't produce as much volume as heavier strings. I switched from 12-54 down to 11-50 recently because of a hand injury. I could'nt play the 12-54s. For a while I thought I'd stick with them, they sound pretty good, I may use them on the OM and 000 for jazz. But now I'm working my way back up to 12-54 on the dread, and man does that thing rumble nicely with them.

You can't drive an acoustic with extra lights unless you are tuned up higher than standard pitch. Plain physics. It will sound like pure ass. If your fingers are tender then build them up so you can go to lights.

Nothing wrong with my fingers, plenty of callouses here. No,I just wanted to try something different. While I like the feel of the strings, there's a lot you can't do as well, like playing a drop D,or double drop D,or any other alternative tunings. Most likely I'll go back to my light gauge,.12-.54. I do however like the D'Adderio EXP's. I miss my guitar tuned a half step down.

I have different guitars set up with different string gauges, & vary according to mood - I'd dispute that there's any 'right' gauge/minimum, tho the guitar has to be set up appropriately, & some altered tunings (eg open C) would be pushing it; but don't forget that a certain Django Reinhardt managed to sound pretty durn good wielding 10 - 45s!..
