I just bought a Yamaha acoustic (fg-403s) and the action seems set really high. Just wondering how to go about lowering it. Is there much involved? This is my first guitar so I'm a little new to it.

Thanks!

there are three components to consider:

1. truss rod adjustment...loosen to get more forward bow in the neck (raises action), tighten to get more backbow in the neck (lowers action)

2. nut...the part up on the headstock...shim to raise, sand (bottom) to lower

3. saddle...the part down on the bridge...shim to raise, sand (bottom) to lower

How do you shim the nut? Isn't it glued on the neck? I'm wondering if this is something I can do at home, I am handy, have built custom homes and have plenty of experience with fine detail, but would like to know what tools, adhesives, etc to use before attempting. TIA

Also, any idea what software opens up *.tab files? Tabledit says I need 2.65 and as far as I can tell, v2.64 is the newest version.
