Members ddlingling Posted December 20, 2005 Members Posted December 20, 2005 i'm flying tomorrow afternoon from northern cali to southern cali, and i really want to bring my guitar home. problem is, its a full size hd-martin28lsv, with a gieb case. i searched the forum for a little info and found this http://www.local1000.com/carryon.php?PHPSESSID=1a5382518c36fc87287af08fedd6fdd7 anyone konw if this letter is still applicable, has anyone had any recent experiences regarding carryon full size guitars, and is it really a bad idea to bring my guitar if, worst case scenario, i'm forced to gate check it?
Members Terry Allan Hall Posted December 20, 2005 Members Posted December 20, 2005 The airlines are pretty weird about consistently following that letter...even from flight to flight! When I fly, my guitar goes into the seat beside me, because I get it a 1/2 price seat...or I drive.
Members Cortfan Posted December 21, 2005 Members Posted December 21, 2005 Call the airline you are flying and ask them. Most will let you check the guitar inside the cabin. Some will not.
Members tamolina Posted December 24, 2005 Members Posted December 24, 2005 The only way to fly commercial with a good guitar is buy it a seat. I know, if you have to fly often that could become expensive. But I have heard too many horror stories about guitars that were checked as baggage...
Members mrlucky7 Posted December 24, 2005 Members Posted December 24, 2005 I have worked for commercial airlines for 15 years....we dont let people carry-on guitars unless it is a really empty flight. If the flight is really empty (I doubt it holiday times) you can try to convince the check-in agent to let you buckle the guitar on the seat beside you. If it is not possible, ask to gate check the guitar so it does not go through the baggage belt system.....a lot of damage to baggages happens there. Loosen the strings on your guitar and remember that baggage compartments on airplanes are cold and extremely dry. A guitar case made of hard plastic is your best bet and a fragile sticker is completly useless !!! From experience, a well packed instrument will survive....one in a cheap case, loose inside the case and with tight strings will not. Just a little side comment here......if you have pets and love them, dont check them on airplanes......
