Members jrew Posted January 2, 2006 Members Posted January 2, 2006 Its solid stainless steel, guestimating at but 3 pounds
Members JasmineTea Posted January 2, 2006 Members Posted January 2, 2006 I don't think so. If it was touching the top it would effect the way it resonates. I think the weight of it would just be added to however many pounds of tension the strings are. Witch would amount to aprox 3 pounds more (if even that much) pressure on the bridge. Hmm. On the other hand, that would still translate to pressure on the top, but I don't think it amounts to much. It might be a good thing. Most of the nicer archtops have a wooden tailpiece. I've heard the reasons for it is to keep the strings in contact with as much wood as possible. Don't quote me on this, but I heard it from a guy who supposedly heard it straight from Benedetto while buying a guitar from him. Mind if I ask what kind of guitar that is?
Members jrew Posted January 2, 2006 Author Members Posted January 2, 2006 Its actually a 1965 harmony patrician. My father and I bought it off ebay broken for the purpose of customizing it. We decided to make it lefty and then put a cutaway in it. From there we refretted, bound the neck, re bound most of the body, made a solid stainless steel tailpiece, then made a new bridge and pickguard by hand. It took us about a year but it turned out good considering it was our first guitar building/restoration project.
Members messeduplilkid Posted January 3, 2006 Members Posted January 3, 2006 I Think you did a BEAUTIFUL job with it. I mean, do you feel like the Res. isnt good enough on the guitar? or do you feel its gonna be a potential problem? Not that i would know hot to fix it, i just wana know what brought up the idea that the reson. is messed up. EJ
Members Winston O Boogy Posted January 3, 2006 Members Posted January 3, 2006 Well, even though they did all the work to it, and it does look great, but, it's still a Harmony, and they're not sought after like other old archtops. Not a bad thing. I just don't think a lot can be expected of it sound wise. I think it looks great.
Members jrew Posted January 3, 2006 Author Members Posted January 3, 2006 I cant tell if it is a problem because ive never used any other tailpiece on it but it doesnt resonate as well ad some of my other acoustics. Your right that it wasnt made well but we took it apart totally and fixed most of the bad workmans ship in it and its all solid woods soo i figure it should sound better.
