Members GreatestGains Posted December 31, 2005 Members Posted December 31, 2005 Just tried out a bunch of Larrys. Awesome tones and very playable. However, the one I liked the tone on the most seemed to have a fatter neck than the others. As I compared many larrivees, even within the same model, I noticed alot of variance. Note these were all the newer 1 3/4 width. Can somone enlighten me here? Do they hand shape each neck? I guess that would explain the variance. It's kinda frustrating, because I really like the guitars and they offer amazing price/performance ratio. I noticed some of the higher series models seem to have smaller profiles. Played an OM10 that was da bomb. But I'm looking more in the 03-05 range.
Members Cldplytkmn Posted January 2, 2006 Members Posted January 2, 2006 there is supposed to be nearly zero varience in larrivee necks, pretty much across the whole spectrum... SUPPOSED...
Members bjorn-fjord Posted January 2, 2006 Members Posted January 2, 2006 No, Larrivees no longer feature hand-carved necks. He started with the CNC in the mid-nineties.Were you comparing gloss-finish guitars to satin guitars? If so, the difference in the necks could be attributed to the fact that the guitars come out of different factories.
Members Cldplytkmn Posted January 2, 2006 Members Posted January 2, 2006 you say that these were all the 'newer 1 3/4 width'... but not all larri's are 1 3/4. their dreads are 1 11/16 and some of the slothead models (possibly others) are 1 7/8 if my memory serves. as for neck profile, as bjorn said, they are all CNC cut and are uniform regardless of series.

Yeah I should have specified. I didn't play any dreads at all, and don't recall any slothead models. What really puzzled me was the difference on two L03, one rosewood one mahogany. Same neck width, the rosewood model just felt fatter in my hands. I know it sounds odd based on the CNC process, but I've played enough guitars in my time to know I'm not imagining things here...
