Members LiveMusic Posted January 3, 2006 Members Posted January 3, 2006 This is the second set I have put on my Carvin c780 -- Adamas Phosphor Bronze 12-53. When I first put them on, I can't describe what I hear but it's not good. It's not that is simply tinny sounding, it's something close to the guitar being almost out of tune or something. I dunno what I'm hearing. But then a few days later, I get the best sound of any strings I've ever tried. I love these strings after a few days. Anyone know what I am describing? I have complained in the past about this jumbo guitar sounding a bit too "sweet." That I would rather it had a bit more bottom. With these strings, after the few days, I get really good tone and it rings so beautifully.

Just a guess but when I first put on a set of new strings I hear a lot of harmonic overtones that seem to overwhelm the fundamental note. Hence a strange almost out of tune kind of sound results(of course new strings tend to take a while to stretch and stay in tune but that is a different matter). Typically in my experience after a few days the overtones seem to "calm down" some and a better sound results.
Members Cldplytkmn Posted January 3, 2006 Members Posted January 3, 2006 do either of you stretch your strings once you first tune them up? It seems to help the strings settle in without putting playing time on them... string it up, tune it, pull straight away from the fretboard at the 12th fret (i pull pretty darn hard, 4-6 inches away from the board... then i usually retune and do it again, but not stretching as much... seems to work out for me since i don't notcie as much of the bright, overtone-y sound.
Members LiveMusic Posted January 3, 2006 Author Members Posted January 3, 2006 I stretch them as I install them. I don't have any problems with it going out of tune and having to retune by tweaking the pegs. The stretching seems to do it. These Adamas strings, I initially bought them when I asked for the cheapest strings the store had one day. $6.
Members guit30 Posted January 3, 2006 Members Posted January 3, 2006 Adamas strings are great, I used them for years, all Taks and Ovations used to come with them, I think they give you a great tone when they are broke in, used to use a set for 6 monthes, liked the core of the 5th and 6th string being the same. Unfortunately, now I am a Elixir polyweb nut Jim

I have never done that, but thanks for the tip! I'll give it a try on my next string change.

Actually, the core AND the wrap for the 5th string and core AND wrap for 6th strings are identical diameter, supposedly they vibrate with "greater amplitude, more consistency and produce a sharper, more precise tone." I dunno but it works on this guitar, for sure.
Members Stophe88 Posted January 4, 2006 Members Posted January 4, 2006 idk if they're coated, but coated strings give me that "tinny" sound and it's not good... but then they go good after playin for a few days
