Members LooseScrew Posted January 13, 2006 Members Posted January 13, 2006 I just picked up a 5022C jumbo rancher and not sure what strings came stock on it. The guitar is perfectly set up and I was shocked at how nice the sound was with the stock strings. I want to replace them with the same when the time comes. Anyone know gauge and maker? TIA.
Members DonK Posted January 14, 2006 Members Posted January 14, 2006 Unfortunately, Gretsch is one of those companies that doesn't list the string gauge at their website. If you bought the guitar new, you might check to see if there's a hangtag that shows the strings, sometimes there is. Lacking that, you've got a few choices: -- Call a knowledgeable dealer and ask (or you could call Gretsch, currently distributed by Fender) -- Use a calipers to measure the low E string, .010 indicates extra light (unlikely), .012 = light, .013 = medium. -- Guess. The "better" makers like Martin and Taylor typically string their dreads and jumbos with mediums, but Fender strings their own acoustics with a Fender .012 - .052 60L Phosphor Bronze set, so I'm gonna guess that's what's on your Rancher, since I'd bet that Fender, as the distributor, is using their strings. Fender also owns Guild, so another option would be a Guild L-350 .012 - .053 set. I'd be surprised if it wasn't one of those two, but who knows. Experiment a little, you'll be okay.
Members Tony Burns Posted January 14, 2006 Members Posted January 14, 2006 you idea of measuring you strings is probably the best- when im in doubt I use a cheap Micrometer i found in a garage sale - sometimes dealers mix and match strings - the dealer may of also replaced the strings on it if they had it a while so using a Micrometer on all the strings and keeping the list will give you a good starting point - Personnaly I like Dadarrio Phospher Bronze Light gauge , besides having a nice sound they last for a long time- sometimes I'll even go to the Extra-lights if it frets too hard and i dont mind a small amount of decrease sound volume.
