Generally, any time you put nylon strings on a steel string guitar, you aren't going to damage the guitar, but you are going to sound like crap.

Nylon strings don't have nearly enough tension to get that top going like it was meant to.

I have no experience with nylon strung guitars, but they must be significantly larger in diameter than the steel, so they won't fit in the nut slots or in the bridge properly.

90 times out of a 100 , putting Nylon strings on a steel string guitars , is a disaster - yes the strings will be higher at the nut because their thicker than steel strings. you also knock down the volume quite a bit ( maybe 50 % ) in the 60's they made modified acoustics for this ( believe it or not they called them Folk Guitars ) and they were never any good -( thou some folks liked them )- Harmony did a bunch this way , almost like a go between a classical guitar and an acoustic. Its your guitar, but give it some though before you mess with it ! Might be better just to buy a medium range Classical .

I have an old Yamaha OM guitar. It was inexpensive and very light. I've used it for several things - ie - hi-strung, etc. So just for a lark, I tried putting on ball-end nylon, and it sounded very good (had to adjust the neck a bit). Not a lot of volume, but I was recording it, so it didn't matter.

So give it a try - about the worst that can happen is you don't like the way it sounds.

You can do it, and the nut slots won't be much of a problem, but the strings aren't going to have enough tension to drive the top very efficiently, so don't expect a lot of volume, and the tone will likely be muddy. You'll probably have to add some relief to the truss rod to induce some forward bow, because the neck will be under a lot less tension with nylon's. And I'd use hard tension nylon's.

As an alternative, have you considered something like a set of Martin silk & steel acoustic strings?
