Members vitek Posted January 5, 2006 Members Posted January 5, 2006 Just curious if anyone has [or had] 12 string Washburn. I was looking on the J28S12DL jumbo body to buy. I do not perform. I have Yamaha FG 312 12 string now Taylor and Martin are to expensive for me.The Washburn sells for about $700. I would like to play one, but there is nobody in my area who carries it. I just like the look of the big boy. Just wondering how playable it is.Thanks for any info.Eugene
Members Bitt81 Posted January 11, 2006 Members Posted January 11, 2006 That is a pretty guitar. The headstock is a little more ornate than I like but I have played it in a couple of shops and it felt very nice. I was eyeing one for a while but on a trip to KC Missouri, I went to the Musician's Friend warehouse outlet there (catalog returns, scratch and dent etc) and found a Washburn D10-12string that the headstock was snapped off. For $35, a small bottle of gorilla glue, strings and a new nut, I got a very playable 12 string. I'll wait for a while to upgrade that.
Members kwakatak Posted January 11, 2006 Members Posted January 11, 2006 I recently tried the 6-string version and it played fingerstyle very easily. Strumming with it should be no problem. BTW - they're pretty good-looking guitars up close. They're not what I would call "high end" but they're good for playing around the house, I suppose.
Members Freeman Keller Posted January 11, 2006 Members Posted January 11, 2006 I can't comment on the Washburn but I regularly see Taylor 355's for around 800 bucks used. I have a T314 and a Martin D12-28 and always felt if I bought another 12 string it would be a Taylor. There is currently a 355-CE (cut away with electronics) on evil bay for $770
Members johnkline Posted January 11, 2006 Members Posted January 11, 2006 I just played a washburn 12 string this morning, it's the 250.00 model dg12s or something, it was ok I guess I didn't like the white binding, I also tried an alvarez in the same price range, played ok, and looked nicer to me. john
Members sid langley Posted January 12, 2006 Members Posted January 12, 2006 Lower range taylors (3 to 5) aren't that expensive and secondhand bargains do pop up on ebay .... Crafter are excellent if you can find one
Members Fstpicker Posted January 13, 2006 Members Posted January 13, 2006 Let me add Alvarez 12-strings to the discussion as another alternative. My RD-20S12 is a very good sounding $250 12-string. Some of the older vintage Alvarez 12-strings are great sounding also. Jeff
Members vitek Posted January 21, 2006 Author Members Posted January 21, 2006 You guys are right. I let my Washburn idea age a little and had a chance to look around. I still like the looks of the big white elephant but the white binding is little to much. And for little more $$ there are lots of other guitarsI made a bone sadle for my old Yamaha and it sounded too chimy, so the old is back and new strings...... it is not that bad. Just had the GAS for while. I thought that I was the only one.Vitek
