I'm gonna retire my old FG Yamaha and use it only for slide playing. I'm thnking bout a new flat-top....Have about $1000-$1500 to spend. I mostly sing a stum chords in a rock-blues band....No fingerstyle, or solo stuff. I do maybe 6 or so accoustic numbers in a normal evening

....Wanna guitar with a "big" sound that cuts thru the mix, but capible of some "delicate" stuff on occaision. Looking for one that gig worthy and can handle a certian amount of abuse.

I like the looks and sound of a J45 Gibson. Lots of guys in this area play Alverez Yaiari WY1's too....I've never played on, but I've heard 'em and think they sound great........The only guitar I have absolutely ruled out is "Ovations" (can't deat with the round back)

So I'd like to hear from you guys.....any opinions????

For gigging, you're better off asking what pup works best in your situation. It's not realy acoustic.

Look around on the board, the question comes up all the time.

REAL happy with my Hysterical ....uh..make that Historical Series Gretsch. The ladies refer to it as "bright" but the guys just say it's loud. Can't make mistakes with this one...the whole world knows it.

I play an epiphone dred just yesterday and was pretty impressed for the $599 sale price. It's not My D41 but neither is the price. I'm considering it for a knock around.

Takamines are great gig guitars. Sound nice, pickups are good and they're solid.

Maton has a great range that you can try out too. Also a solid guitar, and very nice pickups.

I looked at Garrison, but I couldn't get their pickups sounding any good (too much effort with EQ) - maybe you'll have better luck. If you do, the G50 sounded really nice.

Buy it used - what ever you buy - if your on a limited budget, for 500 dollars its tough to find a decent upper end model - Taks are good , Most Yamahas , Seagull is another one worth looking into, Id get ahold of the Blue Book of Acoustic Guitar values and see what holds its value ( so when you get tired of it- if you do ? ) and look for something used - you can always sell it for what you bought it for , or trade it in on something better latter- without getting skinned alive. and for a crying out loud dont buy anything you cant play first -

I'd say you can't go wrong with a J45... another option would be the J100xtra, its a big boy that should be able to find some room in the mix.

+1 on that. And boy, are you in luck. It just so happens that I'm selling both a J45 and a J100extra. :D And, the price of each is within your range. Both btw have factory installed Fishman pup's. PM me if you want details.

I think for what your doing, the J100 would be ideal, and I'm not just trying to sell you a guitar. The J100 is a large guitar with a big sound that will do a great job of cutting through the mix, a terrific strummer, but also very well balanced with a gorgeous, sweet sound when played delicately. The J45 would work well too.

Sorry for the spam, but trust me, being a Gibson fan I would have recommended either of these guitars anyway.

I play a Martin 00016 RGT w cutawaty and electronics, and love it for live stuff.

But I also own a J45 and a J185. The 185 is has maple back and sides and is pretty bright to cut through a mix.

I just saw this awhile ago in MF

I throught is was sell for less than a grand a few weeks ago, so give em a call and ask em why it went up.

I bet the might sell it for the 999.95 that I think I saw it for.

You can thank me later.
