Aloha Everyone,

I'm an intermediate rhythm-style who's been playing for about 7 years, and am in the market for a new guitar around $500. Don't know that much about actual guitar construction and was wondering if anyone had advice on what to look for when shopping guitars?

Also, the people at Guitar Center have steered me towards the Martin and Breedlove, IMO they sound pretty similar in terms of tone, bass, etc. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks!

What about Seagull and Godin and stuff like that?

The HPL Martins are pretty good, but you might feel better with a solid wood guitar. 1 series and 15 series Martins would be better than the X series, cost a little more. Under $700.

+1

Don't limit yourself to what's available through GC. Martin X is good for the $, but before you buy, it's definitely worth it to check out Seagull, Norman, S&P (all Godin brands):

I have a DM

I like it

I've played J-45's, SJ-200's, HD-28's, Hummingbirds, you get the idea

the DM is a good intermediate guitar

I never have trouble with it staying in tune either, it ALWAYS sounds great, like an old pair of jeans:D

it has a solid spruce top

with laminate sides and back

the back and sides are not as important as the top, which should be solid wood for the best tone

Thanks for the suggestions everybody. Went to my local guitar store and really liked the Seagull M6 Gloss, for around $450 w/o the case.
