Members loose_axle Posted February 2, 2006 Members Posted February 2, 2006 I'm looking to buy an acoustic guitar, either a Cort or a Fender. I like the look of the Cort SFX-1X, has anyone ever played one of these? Also what Fender acoustics are good. I don't want to spend too much either and I want it to have cutaway and also be acoustic/ electric so any suggestions as to which guitars from these two brands would be great, thanks
Members FingerBone Bill Posted February 2, 2006 Members Posted February 2, 2006 Normally this would be a no brainer. Fender have a poor reputation for acoustic guitars. I'm sure they have their fans but these people are at best misguided, at worst deranged! Cort on the other hand have a fairly good reputation for budget priced instruments. I've tried a few and they offer excellent value for money. But.... The SFX series? These are thinline guitars which means they are primarily intended for amplification. I wouldn't expect a great acoustic tone from any thinline style guitar. Check out their Earth range if you can live without the cutaway.
Members loose_axle Posted February 2, 2006 Author Members Posted February 2, 2006 So there's no guitar in the earth series that has a cutaway?
Members FingerBone Bill Posted February 2, 2006 Members Posted February 2, 2006 I don't think so. What's the big thing with the cutaway anyway? Trust me, they're overrated!
Members loose_axle Posted February 2, 2006 Author Members Posted February 2, 2006 I dunno, just figured I could get barre chords up there a lot easier if I ever needed to... Should I get one with a fishman pickup?
Members FingerBone Bill Posted February 2, 2006 Members Posted February 2, 2006 Acoustics start to sound really thin once you start getting up the fretboard. They're not like an electric where you can play those weedly little notes through a big amp and still get a huge sound. And when you think about it there isn't a barre chord you could play above the 11th fret that you couldn't play lower down the neck is there? I've got 6 acoustics in my house at present, only one has a cutaway. It's just not an issue to me (and no, I'm not just an open chord strummer). Pickup?? Well they come in handy if you are playing gigs and nice to have if you plan to record. If not then save your money - you can always fit one later if needed.
Members loose_axle Posted February 2, 2006 Author Members Posted February 2, 2006 Its mainly for recording, I already have one at home that doesn't. Its a Fender DG 8 and its about 12 years old, frets need replacing, so does nut and saddle. I don't know whether its worth fixing. I wouldn't if it hadn't been given to me... what do you think?
Members FingerBone Bill Posted February 2, 2006 Members Posted February 2, 2006 What's the retail on a new DG8? About $350 AUS. Hardly seems worth re-fretting? Maybe as a DIY job? New nut and saddle wouldn't cost you much. Whereabouts are you?
Members loose_axle Posted February 2, 2006 Author Members Posted February 2, 2006 Miranda, Australia, I was thinking of using it as a practice for re-fretting and string changing meself.. know of any good places for getting a good deal on a Cort?

Ebay? There's a place in Bondi Junction that sells them, but I didn't check their prices as I was looking at Cole Clarkes. There's a shop in Miranda, have you checked there?
Members guit30 Posted February 2, 2006 Members Posted February 2, 2006 Cort makes most Fender acoustics
Members loose_axle Posted February 2, 2006 Author Members Posted February 2, 2006 Yeah I checked at Miranda, but their prices are pretty steep compared with places like Venue Music and stuff... I think Allans sells corts, I'm not certain. What was this shop at Bondi Junction?

Small world mate - I live about 10 minutes drive from you. I'm pretty sure that Shire Music carries Cort (that's probably the store you are talking about). Have you checked out Guitar Zone at Sutherland, he's a good guy (not sure if he's a Cort dealer but he has a lot of Cole Clarkes and Garrisons - sounds like you're ready for an upgrade?) The only other Cort dealer I know of near you would be Steves Guitars at Hurstville.

You could also try some other brands like Tanglewood and Yamaha. A good idea would be to go to Paramatta Rd around Leichhardt and Annandale. There are a few big music shops within a few kilometers along that street: Downtown Music (Annandale), Billy Hydes (Annandale), and another big one opposite Norton St (Leichhardt). Make a day of it and try everything in your price range. Come to think of it, Billy Hydes may have had a couple of Corts in there the last time I looked.

Heck I'll say... Guitar Zone's great, I've always got excellent service there... I was wondering whether an Aria might even do the trick... Either that or a yamaha... I'm not really fussed anymore about the brand I guess... its just getting a nicely priced acoustic electric that will last and has a good sound...
Members FingerBone Bill Posted February 2, 2006 Members Posted February 2, 2006 What's your price range?
Members loose_axle Posted February 2, 2006 Author Members Posted February 2, 2006 $400 would be the max and even then I'm kinda pushing it, around $300 would be nice. I'm mainly a bass player but I love playing guitar as I'm not in a band or anything and bass on its own is a bit of a drag, so I'm looking to just get acoustic for mucking around and recording with in the future and next year I want to get classical guitar lessons, get a classical and also an electric. At the moment at lot of money is going on doing a total refit of my bass so I'm running on empty..
Members FingerBone Bill Posted February 3, 2006 Members Posted February 3, 2006 Well $399 will get you a Cort Earth 100. No pickup but sounds good for the money. A Washburn D10-S is another option at the same price point - again, no electrics. Done a bit of "research" on Ebay for you... Tanglewood got very good reviews in a "Shootout" in Australian Guitarist Mag last year... I don't know this model but at $299 BUY IT NOW with a pickup it has to worth a look http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Tanglewood-Cutaway-Acoustic-Guitar-with-pickup-Black_W0QQitemZ7386446802 This one - Another Tanglewood, no pickup but could be a good buy???? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Tanglewood-Acoustic-Guitar_W0QQitemZ7386233148 This Washburn? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Washburn-acoustic-electric-guitar_W0QQitemZ7386175629Starting bid $300 - BUY IT NOW $420. Has a pickup - would be worth bidding on. And lastly there's a Sigma going http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Acoustic-guitar-SDR-28H-Sigma-Martin-brand-Good-Cond_W0QQitemZ7385483674QQCurrent bid $191.50 - no pickup and a repaired crack on the neck but could be a cheap buy. Don't forget if you can get a guitar cheap enough you can always retro fit a pickup.
Members loose_axle Posted February 3, 2006 Author Members Posted February 3, 2006 Great, thanks a million
