crappy epi acoustic

Hey guys I have a crappy 4-yr old epi acoustic from a player's pack. The model is EM something which would suggest it's a montana clone I believe, but whatever ... it looks pretty much like the current DG pack.

 

Anywho I played it for a few months and then moved on to electrics. I want to restring it and give it to my younger brother but I have no idea what guage is on it. Can anyone tell me what most low end acoustics like that come with? Also, assuming it came with 12s, would putting 11s on it require anything more than a truss rod adjustment? Thanks in advance.

12 is the standard, but putting 11s isn't going to require any special work....

I'm guessing 11s would just have a bit thinner tone, and be easier on bends? I'm thinking of going with that set for my lil bro if that's the case (like it is with electrics).

11s will be a little easier on a new players fingers. I don't thing the tone or string bends will be big issues for a beginner...

I think you should just keep 12s on....it's the standard and I think it's just good to start out on

you probably won't have to adjust the truss rod. it is possible you could have to though of course.

i prefer 11's. let him decide.

Thanks for the replies ... I haven't played it in 3 years so I think I'll toss on the 12s and see how it feels and let him mess with it then put on the 11s if I don't like it. I still have no idea what it's strung up with (but I know they're thicker than 12s).
