Members Guitar Centaur Posted February 4, 2006 Members Posted February 4, 2006 Played one today, and damn near creamed my jeans. I'm lusting for one bad, now. For a little perspective, I'm mostly an electric player. Seems like the perfect guitar for a solo/duo act, as it can do acoustic and electric very convincingly, giving you a lot of options. Now I just have to figure out how to finance it....
Members knockwood Posted February 4, 2006 Members Posted February 4, 2006 The thing is an abomination. It makes me uneasy. I hate it for the same reason I hate greatest hits albums and all-in-one shelf stereo systems, for the same reason I wouldn't buy a reversible fireproof three piece suit that converts into a ski suit/wet suit/leisure suit/football uniform. It gives me the creeps. Don't go by me, though. I'm an idiot.
Members t60 fan Posted February 4, 2006 Members Posted February 4, 2006 I will hate it too (until I can afford one).

Members Highway_61 Posted February 5, 2006 Members Posted February 5, 2006 Played one: I can get more woody sounds out of my 150.00 Danelectro.

Gosh, you're so friendly, maybe 'ol Bob will just give you one! What I was sayin' is I'd love to have one - just a slight attempt at humor. *grimmaces while explaining joke*
Members Preacher Will Posted February 5, 2006 Members Posted February 5, 2006 Played one for the first time yesterday for about an hour. Plugged it into a little Fishman amp and was VERY impressed with the tonality. With five different pickup combinations, it seemed to me that you should be able to find something that you liked--I certainly did. While I did get good acoustic tones out of it, I can't say that it was as versatile as Taylor would like you to think that it is. There were some nice hollowbody, jazz box type sounds but, as expected, it won't replace a Tele. Still, if I could scrape up $2,200.00 or so from the seat cushions of my couch, I'd buy one tomorrow--but, then, I'm a Taylor guy. Down side for me was the really thin unplugged sound. This thing would make a good stage guitar, but always having to be plugged in is a hassle and a waste.
Members studyscoot Posted February 5, 2006 Members Posted February 5, 2006 regular acoustics sound better for acoustic, regular electrics sound better for electric. At that price you could get one of each.
Members SilleeSpyder Posted February 5, 2006 Members Posted February 5, 2006 The T5 has its own kind of sound. It sounds "good" though. Do not try and emulate with it -play it for originality. It plays well and sounds great. I personally prefer it through acoustic amplifiers.
Members darkest_fugue Posted February 5, 2006 Members Posted February 5, 2006 i was thinking about one for a live guitar but you cant split the electric signal with the acoustic which is not practical for me...my 2 parker flys will stay my live guitars for my electric and acoustic fix

Members guitarcapo Posted February 5, 2006 Members Posted February 5, 2006 I tried one out for about 15 minutes in a guitar store and thought it sounded kind of tinny no matter what I did. Maybe it was the amp. I think what it's trying to be is an archtop electric like a Gibson L-7 or some jazz box. Give me something like THIS with a floating pickguard pickup instead
Members tiger roach Posted February 6, 2006 Members Posted February 6, 2006 I think they are kinda cool, but I've got no use for one. For a primarily electric player who wants acoustic-ish tones at his/her disposal, it would be a nice one.

Members JasmineTea Posted February 6, 2006 Members Posted February 6, 2006 I think the T-5 deserves a place on the SLAMMIT thread. edit: Now that I've paged through the SLAMMIT thread, I see it's already been slammed.
Members Cldplytkmn Posted February 6, 2006 Members Posted February 6, 2006 haha JT i don't think we missed much on that thread. maybe its time for SLAMMIT II

Looks to me like the only thing it was slammed for was being able to do metal as well as acoustic convincingly. If versatility is something to be looked down upon, all I have to say is: "Welcome to the Dark Ages". pssst......The earth really ISN'T flat!
Members JasmineTea Posted February 6, 2006 Members Posted February 6, 2006 Nothing wrong with being versatile. Nothing wrong with the Dark Ages either. But I think if you want a Tele sound, you're going to need a Tele. No, I don't go for the swiss army guitars.
Members t60 fan Posted February 6, 2006 Members Posted February 6, 2006 Plus its too hard getting Twinkees into "F" holes. Dangit, I did it again!
Members Cldplytkmn Posted February 6, 2006 Members Posted February 6, 2006 you know how the swiss army knife has a spoon... but its not really a spoon... and you know how the swiss army knife has a saw... but its not really a saw... and you know how the swiss army knife has a screwdriver... but its not a screwdriver... its like that.

Oh, yea? Well, it was good enough for MacGyver!
Members Cldplytkmn Posted February 6, 2006 Members Posted February 6, 2006 well {censored}... half a twinkie and a shoelace and macguyver could build a space rocket... so thats not saying much.
Members A. Tad Askew Posted February 7, 2006 Members Posted February 7, 2006 I recently played one at GC though several amps and it just sounded sterile to me. I agree with the poster whought thought the Parker Fly (or PRS HBII w/piezo) did a better acoustic/electric thing. In a worship setting, I just decided on 2 guitars: Strat for electric work, various acoustics for the woody tones....
