There seems to be a higher-than-usual influx of new members here at the HC.

So I wanted to do my part by being among the first to welcome all by giving a little preview of the kind of intelligent and informed discussions - senior members please contain your laughter- they can be expecting 'round here:

So with that being said, which one of your (hopefully) 10 fingers is your "go to" finger when playing your acoustic? Which one dazzles? Which is the "quickest draw"? The "tone-maker"?

I'll start: the "inside" of my right index, which helps me achieve good tone while strumming ( in an upstroke slo-sliding manner).

And please no talk of "toe-play" or the middle finger. There's some younger folk here.......

Right hand middle finger. That's the one I primarily use for fingerstyle along with the thumb. My only real gripe is that he used to get me in real trouble while I was driving to work when I used to live in Philly. :o

I try and keep the nail about 2mm beyond the quick so that when I pluck with it the string kind of sits underneath right where it meets my fingertip. Accidents do happen, though. If it gets too long it sort of bends and splits along the edge of the quick. When that happens my playing suffers and I get a dull tone because my fingertip takes over. Because of this I'm seriously thinking of buying fingerpicks.

As for the rest of the fingers I'd like to use my index finger a little more but I think all those years of hybrid picking have it trained to just sit there while old "tall man" does all the work. So far I've got him carrying about 1/3 of the load. I'd also like to use my ring finger more but he's not having it. I anchor the pinky most of the time.

As for left hand, I'm really happy with my pinky. After years of playing electric I learned to really dig in with it (hammeron, pulloffs, bends), particularly with heavy gauge strings (.011s). My ring finger is the team leader on that squad though.

I'm left handed, but play right-handed, and I have two fingers (the middle and ring finger) on my right hand that are pretty useless due to soccer goaltending and football injuries. Yet, I insist on playing fingerstyle in my own inimitable, two-fingered (or more precisely one-fingered, one-thumbed) style. Therefore, I would have to answer: My right index finger...

I tried to approach this by thinking of which finger I could not afford to lose. I guess first finger left (fret) hand is the one.

As far as "go to", the whole left hand is important. I guess you could say my left is like the Detroit Pistons. No go-to-guy, just a solid team effort.

+1

Definately the left social finger! When I broke my left index the middle lead the pack in the shift to the left. Played 3 finger (left) mandolin for about 6 weeks at the height of festival season. This leadership also forced my, until then, near useless left pinky to pull its weight.

I'd like a better description, please. Somehow I can't seem to picture what you're saying>>>...........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................:)

middle finger, both hands. But I really need all of my left fingers and at least 2 and a thumb of my right.

Sometimes for strumming purposes, instead of a pick what I do is use the side (ish) of my right thumb for the downstroke starting from the lo-E close to the soundhole and going away from it toward the bridge.

I then use the inside-side of my index finger for the return trip, the only difference being that my upstroke is more or less vertical and not at an angle. (Rhyme & repeat)

When this whole cycle is done in rapid succession, my strumming hand looks like a bent-out-of-shape pair of clippers. Again, I don't know if you can picture that. My main my point was that in this manner, I get what I consider to be the most "natural" tone that my acoustic has to offer.

But I have to have fresh strings on otherwise all I get is a dull muted sound.
