Members Johneecatt Posted February 21, 2006 Members Posted February 21, 2006 I've heard this term used in regard to guitar tops, but I'm not sure what it means??
Members studyscoot Posted February 21, 2006 Members Posted February 21, 2006 its the waves that appear when spruce is cut at the exact right angle. The lines run perpendicular to the grain lines in the wood. Like this:
Members Dave W. Posted February 21, 2006 Members Posted February 21, 2006 +1 I am not much into flashy guitars, but that is some piece of craftsmanship. Too pretty to play, can you tell us something about it?

Its one of Taylor`s thirtieth anniversary models.A few years ago I had a 25th Anniversary dread in quilted mahogany.Very pretty but not a great tone machine.Shallower body than a typical dread also. The X`s in the inlay are 14K gold!
Members studyscoot Posted February 21, 2006 Members Posted February 21, 2006 well, this one IS a tone machine. It is a 30th year limited...and its Brazillian Rosewood! The silking in it is truely amazing. Its not mine, though I have heard it play, and it really sings. The owner has a rather unique pickup combination, and I would say that it just about completely captures the real tone of the guitar.
Members emir Posted February 21, 2006 Members Posted February 21, 2006 Silked spruce tops look a bit like flamed maples dont they?
Members Andrewrg Posted February 22, 2006 Members Posted February 22, 2006 I believe the correct, technical term for silking is medullary rays.

Only the best of the best spruce will have similar looks as the posted example. And these aren't always the best sounding examples. Read the other recent threads on spruce.
Members nylon rock Posted February 22, 2006 Members Posted February 22, 2006 Is silking better to have than bear claw? (in terms of tone)
Members Johneecatt Posted February 22, 2006 Author Members Posted February 22, 2006 Thanks for the info, Guys. And studyscoot, thanks for the pic - what an amazing instrument.
