Members d03nut Posted February 22, 2006 Members Posted February 22, 2006 Due to the recent "political climate", i.e. turmoil, here at the HC vis-a-vis OTs, I think I would like to understand a little better the HC "mission statement". Yeah, I realize that the forum rules are there specifically for this purpose but I'm still a little confused. (Warning: it's going to be one of those threads with lots of quote.....wait, "quotation marks"). What I need to know -even if for selfish reasons- is what you guys consider off-topic? Simple, right? Not necessarily, I'm afraid. I believe good music, songwriting prowess, having "something worthwhile" to say, etc. comes not just from staying "on-topic" but from many other factors. A lot of things contribute to an artist's "art". I read astronomy journals in order to "write" better music for *********** sake. I'm into music because I love a great song. Not just a clip of some guy doing acrobatics with his instrument. Pay attention, I did say "not just". Great chops certainly have their place if they're part of a greater "picture". A foul mouth with "nothing to say", well is just that. OTOH, George Carlin has a foul mouth............ So when I post a thread entitled "sex and tone, oh yeah", even though it may sound like I'm being silly or whatever, I'm dead serious. So is sex off-topic because it doesn't have the word acoustic guitar in it? Doesn't life in all its' glory and ugliness effect you and by extension your music? You don't become good at what you do by only discussing string guage............
Members Whalebot Posted February 22, 2006 Members Posted February 22, 2006 I think that the Cucumber Sauce thread was OT, but funny as hell. Lately a dude named HOOMER was posting some stuff that didn't follow any sentence structure or anything, it was all jumbled...to me that is Off Topic. But I'm not saying that this guy is bad or anything, maybe I just didn't get what he was saying.
Members Danocoustic Posted February 22, 2006 Members Posted February 22, 2006 Look. This board is called Acoustic Guitar. That's what it's about. It's also specifically on-topic only. Other acoustic instruments (banjo, mandolin, &c) have been tolerated, even welcomed. But this isn't one of the "Jam" boards. That's where the off-topic stuff belongs, NOT here.

I agree. This is a on-topic forum and any discussion that doesn't pertain to the topic on-hand should be nixed.Good thinking !

Members Stophe88 Posted February 22, 2006 Members Posted February 22, 2006 there's nothing wrong with goin off topic as long as there is still acoustic related material on the forum forums are communities, not prisons

Members BlueStrat Posted February 22, 2006 Members Posted February 22, 2006 Maybe I should start a topic: Should I buy a new Seagull or just fist a pigeon?
Members Cldplytkmn Posted February 22, 2006 Members Posted February 22, 2006 now technically, thats on topic but asking everybody to guess what i'm thinking of isn't, aparently
Members JasmineTea Posted February 22, 2006 Members Posted February 22, 2006 Originally posted by Stophe88 there's nothing wrong with goin off topicas long as there is still acoustic related material on the forumforums are communities, not prisons Well put. Too bad the rest of these tight wads won't see it that way.

I think the simple fact that they are guitar players keeps them on-topic by default.
Members Stophe88 Posted February 22, 2006 Members Posted February 22, 2006 yeah... what's gonna keep the experienced players around if all they see on here is the same cliche over and over
Members mrlucky7 Posted February 22, 2006 Members Posted February 22, 2006 I missed the poodle jousting thread It is fun little things like this that makes a forum enjoyable. If it is only about technical things, then it can become quite boring:bor: All off topic also does not make sense but a good mixture makes it a good forum where you can interact and have fun. I find that even on the off topic subjects, acoustic guitars make their way into the thread....it is our common passion.
Members BlueStrat Posted February 23, 2006 Members Posted February 23, 2006 Originally posted by Stophe88 yeah... what's gonna keep the experienced players around if all they see on here is the same cliche over and over I dunno...noobs asking a never ending stream of questions is pretty entertaining sometimes! Seriously, I wish we'd have had forums when I was a kid learning....I'd probably be a lot better today than I am!

Well then you need to nix the acoustic amp stuff and acoustic electric because this is the acoustic guitar forum. It don't say nothing about electric in the title IMHO.....Sir
