Members tx.toadies Posted February 24, 2006 Members Posted February 24, 2006 Do cut-aways take away from the tone of the guitar or are they just for upper fret access?

But "take away from the tone" can be sort of like taking $1 away from $100. For those that need access, that 1% loss might be worth it.
Members Qengho Posted February 24, 2006 Members Posted February 24, 2006 I've asked several respected luthiers this very question and they all said it has no effect on tone. The upper bout is acoustically dead for all practical purposes.
Members Cldplytkmn Posted February 24, 2006 Members Posted February 24, 2006 anything that makes the body cavity smaller, will decrease volume... i do believe however that good luthiers can build around it.
Members bjorn-fjord Posted February 24, 2006 Members Posted February 24, 2006 From my experience I've found that guitars with cutaways tend to have a little less volume and a little less bass response. If you are looking for balance between bass and treble I find that guitars with cutaways tend to be a little "treble heavy" and the bass is kind of "thumpy", if that makes any sense.

Members studyscoot Posted February 24, 2006 Members Posted February 24, 2006 probably won't change the tone, but it might slightly hamper the overall volume of the guitar. The volume of the guitar is important, thats why jumbos sound like they do and why backpackers sound like they do...
