Members Dave W. Posted February 25, 2006 Members Posted February 25, 2006 Funny, I didn't know he was lost;) Seriously, he is very good, and I have a few of his dvd's.....but "world's greatest" covers a lot of ground. Tommy Emanuel is not too shabby either.

Members riffmeister Posted February 25, 2006 Members Posted February 25, 2006 has anyone heard Tommy Emmanuel? he's the best, in my book.
Members catdaddy Posted February 25, 2006 Members Posted February 25, 2006 Pat Donohue is one of the best fingerstylists that I have ever heard. For me though the thing that trips my trigger is his choice of material. I can appreciate great playing but when its combined with the style of music that I like best well.... P.S. suprswd: hyperbole....check it out.

All I was saying was that there is a big difference in the statements "the worlds greatest finger picker" and "my favorite finger picker in the world". I really like Pat Donahue's arrangements of some of the old swing tunes.

Members oliB Posted February 26, 2006 Members Posted February 26, 2006 boring! I like Michael Hedges,Adrian Legg,Don ross and certainly Ralph Towner much more.
Members Tony Burns Posted February 26, 2006 Members Posted February 26, 2006 Yes pat Donahue is fantastic-( somewhat of a ragtime musician ) he did a concert in Fredonia N.Y. about 2 years ago ( blew the doors off the place ) another super fantastic flatpicker and Fiddler is Mark O'connor , his performance is the best concert that ive ever seen -period his swing music kicks A--

Members BrainChild Posted February 27, 2006 Members Posted February 27, 2006 To say someone is the best doesn't mean much if you haven't heard everyone in the world to start with. Second do you judge on what's recorded, what's played live, or what they actually can play when not performing, which often is far better than while performing. Lastly, I for sure am not good enough to know how to even judge between great pickers. Until you are on their level you only know what sounds awesome, not what is necessarily the hardest or etc. to play. Personally I find Doyle Dykes one of the people who amazes me.

Best in the world? No such animal - just a bunch of scary good players (such as Don Ross, Tommy Emmanuel, Phil Keaggy, Doyle Dykes, Buddy Miller, Leo Kottke, Ron Block, etc). Now Mark O'Connor is another story all together. I've seen him in concert, listened to several of his CD's, and read more superlatives written about him by world class players than about anyone else alive. IMHO - Mark O'Connor may be the greatest living American musician. He is beyond scary good on any string instrument he cares to pick up.
Members Cldplytkmn Posted February 27, 2006 Members Posted February 27, 2006 in life in general... 'best' is almost always a myth.
Members foolishpride Posted February 27, 2006 Members Posted February 27, 2006 Sorry, but the late, great Chet Atkins already designated Tommy Emmanuel as the best guitar player on the planet. And Tommy is a fingerpicker. I think Chet qualified as a pretty good judge.

I am a big time Tommy Emmanuel fan, and I know Chet gave him the title of "Certified Guitar Player", along with John Knowles. I would be interested if you could point me to the source of your quote, as I think I have missed it, and would enjoy seeing it somewhere official.

The host of Woodsongs, Michael Johnathon, mentions this when he had Tommy on as a guest on the Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour show. It is also mentioned under many music reviews for a few of Tommy's C.D.'s. http://www.fretplay.com/review/e/emmanuel_tommy/discography-CD-B00004TAMZ-Only.shtml
