Members dboy420 Posted March 1, 2006 Members Posted March 1, 2006 I had a 000 a while back-it was a really nice guitar--$$ problems and I had to sell. There was one thing that really annoyed me about the guitar--the damn decal rosette. I would think martin can put a nicer looking rosette on a $700 guitar. i would pay an extra 50 for a beeter rosette. Its hard to understand as my cheapo $100 acoustics have nicer rosettes.
Members JasmineTea Posted March 1, 2006 Members Posted March 1, 2006 I agree. But I think that's the only drawback for the 15 series. Soundwise they're batting 1000 for me.
Members pgcorky Posted March 1, 2006 Members Posted March 1, 2006 I've got a D-15. I agree that the rosette is pretty weak, but I just close my eyes and play. And I have to say, at least it's understated rather than gaudy.
Members musicbox Posted March 1, 2006 Members Posted March 1, 2006 if by using a cheap decal for a rosset they can put more money towards using a higher grade wood, all the better. this guitar is a sleeper, not a showpiece. no binding, no gloss for most models, simple small dots. enjoy the tone of this little beauty. it just gets better and better with time.
Members Cldplytkmn Posted March 1, 2006 Members Posted March 1, 2006 anybody wanna agree with me that this line could quite possibly in 50 years be what the gibson LGs are now? just in terms of being desired, but not valuable due to the sheer volume? i play them and its a guitar that i really wanna meet up with 20-30 years down the road... i dig em.
Members JasmineTea Posted March 2, 2006 Members Posted March 2, 2006 Ha! The other guitarist in my band left his 000-15 here for me to fiddle with. THIS is a sweet little guitar...
Members tonedrops Posted March 2, 2006 Members Posted March 2, 2006 000-15, the most ______?______ guitar that I own.
Members bsman Posted March 2, 2006 Members Posted March 2, 2006 I like the 15 series a lot. I don't have one, but I've loved every one I've played - especially the 000-15s. However, I do think that the decal rosette is bush league. If it's a money-saving proposition, how about this: No rosette! I'd rather have nothing to mess with the utilitarian appeal than a bogus decal.
Members flatpick Posted March 2, 2006 Members Posted March 2, 2006 I have an 000-15 and although it is not my main guitar, I love it. I still pick it up a lot and its sheer simplicity makes it beautiful. So many of the "dressed up" guitars are a little too fancy for me. But overall, My larrivees are my favorites. I think that, as a group, Martins are overrated and definitely overpriced.
Members Cldplytkmn Posted March 2, 2006 Members Posted March 2, 2006 something is worth what someone is willing to pay... so i don't think it can really be said that martin's are overpriced until they stop selling at the price they're asking.

In my limited opinion much more bang for the buck w/o any bling.

No doubt when you compare specs the Larry's rule in that range. And I think they are a more versatile, balanced instrument, kinda' "neutral" if you will. But I do have this undeniable fascination with the 15 series, particularly the 000-15s. There's one behind the counter of the local guitar shop that I'm doin' my best to avoid. Probably will be my first Martin someday. Unless I risk my marriage and buy my friend's D42 I posted last week about.
Members Magpel Posted March 2, 2006 Members Posted March 2, 2006 The guy I'm playing with now plays the all-mahogony D-15. I really like that guitar. It has a loud and full-sepctrum kind of sound. I'm playing my new Larrivee L-05, and, with its midsy shimmer and great articulate sound, it makes for a great contrast. Anyway, the 15s are nice and a great bargain.

Members brooksblues Posted March 2, 2006 Members Posted March 2, 2006 I have a D15 and love it. I agree that it doesnt have anything fancy to but its nice and simple solid guitar thats sounds amazing, and you cant beat the solid mahogany.
Members kwakatak Posted March 2, 2006 Members Posted March 2, 2006 I think the Martin 15s are nice blues fingerpicking guitars, particularly the 000-15S and OM-15(CE). I also don't care for the decal rosette and lack of body binding but you can't ignore the tone.
Members t60 fan Posted March 2, 2006 Members Posted March 2, 2006 Geez guys, isn't someone gonna' argue and say 15's are overrated or I've got a zager that blows any D15 away?
Members Cldplytkmn Posted March 2, 2006 Members Posted March 2, 2006 well we did already get the argument that martin on the whole is overrated and overpriced... does that count t60?
Members Gretsch Fan Posted March 3, 2006 Members Posted March 3, 2006 I must admit part of the reason I went for the 000-16 instead of the D15 or 000-15 was because of the rosette. They sure sounded damn fine though so one may end up in the family at some point.
Members SteveKrasnow Posted March 3, 2006 Members Posted March 3, 2006 Didn't you know...Martin uses real gold for the foil logo sticker!

Members dboy420 Posted March 3, 2006 Author Members Posted March 3, 2006 has anyone played any of the Larrivee sold mahagonay guitars--L-03MT or similiar-how do they compare. The Larrivee is a bit cheaper in price but how about the sound.
Members Cldplytkmn Posted March 3, 2006 Members Posted March 3, 2006 i've never played an 03MT, but i own an L05MT... the issue comparing the two brands hog tops is that they couldn't be any more different... The closest you could get would PROBABLY be the 000-15 and the OM03MT, because i'm assuming the different bracing would make a bigger impact on the D's... but the Martin -15s have a definite general character that i've picked up on all of them i've played... frankly, they sound gritty and rough around the edges... in the GREAT way... if i was more of a blues fingerpicker guy, that's what i'd be playing cause they have a certain 'voice' to them. my Larry MT has a brighter sound, and is a bit more suited to what i do because of it, but like i said, they are different beasts, that much is for sure.
Members Tweedledee Posted March 3, 2006 Members Posted March 3, 2006 I LOVE my 000-15. Such a great, woody, distinct tone and perfectly understated looks. As far as Martins being overrated and/or overpriced, I bought mine used (in absolutely perfect condition) and I don't think you could find a better acoustic guitar for $600. Sure, there are some out there that are just as good at that price point, but it's not overpriced at all, in my opinion.
