Members emergency_pants Posted March 14, 2006 Members Posted March 14, 2006 I posted recently about a problem with the b-band pickup on my new Tanglewood TW145. It's unbalanced. The retailer advises me to use paper shims under pickup to aid contact. So I did that and now a different string is unbalanced. So I put a shim under that one... and the whole lot went out of balance! Knock-on effects? Hmmmph! So... now I've loosened the strings, removed the (loose!) saddle, shimmied (heh!) and retightened the strings about ten times, and had to replace the strings once because they weaken and snap. Question is, where should I draw the line with this and call the company to tell them I'm not prepared to do this anymore! really, I'm no luthier and when I bought my guitar I didn't expect to have to do this messing about! I just want a guitar I can play, record with and enjoy. Am I being unrealistic to order an electro-acoustic and then not be prepared to do this? or am I right in thinking that it should should have been ready to record with when I received it? It's making me unhappy.
Members bjorn-fjord Posted March 14, 2006 Members Posted March 14, 2006 Does your guitar have an under saddle transducer style pickup? If so, a loose saddle can cause major headaches. The string tension can cause the saddle to tip forward slightly resulting in uneven pressure on the crystals. I would return it, or at least demand that it be repaired. It's a hard thing to fix without a means to measure the output from each string, ie. a strobe tuner.

Also, the retailer technician seems very friendly too, so I doubt if I'll have any problems demanding it be returned. Simon.

We as consumers need to hold them to their obligations and you should not have to do any of that. Besides if you keep messing with it they will find a reason to void the warranty. Just my opinion.
