Hi.

I'm thinking of replacing the tuning heads on my Epiphone DR-500R Masterbuilt. They are gold and i dont like gold hardware, if replacing i would get the exact same tuners ("Grover 18:1 Sta-Tite Guitar Machines") but in chrome.

Can i do this replacement myself, or should i take it to a guitar tech.

Thanks

If they are exactly the same tuners you can do it yourself - the bushings and screw holes will match (don't overtighten the little screws that hold the tuners on).

If you are going to change anything (brand, model, etc) be aware that the bushing holes may be a different size, the shafts may stick farther or less far out of the headstock, and the mounting screws may be in different location. In addition the nuts/washers on the headstock side may be different size and might result in "eyes" around the posts where the washers contact the finish.

StewMac has dimension drawings of all the tuners they sell so you can measure your old ones and make sure the new ones are compatible.
