I'm not sure: Was yours a Kottke reference?

I kind of fell into fingerstyle because of my crappy building. Paper-thin walls and bitchy neighbors... Fingers are quieter.

Except lately I'm feeling deficient in that I should be comfortable with picks, too. So I'm trying to play with a pick now and then. Fu*k the neighbors.

What was my point? Oh yes. I am fond of licorice.

Ah, yer all nuts. I use the clawhammer, sometimes a crowbar for a different tone.

But I do fingersyle too. Usualy for a few months and then get into something els. Mostly I play with a Fender medium.

After seeing Tommy Emmanuel live I've taken to beating on my guitar like a drum. Believe me, like excessively low humidity it can take it and any marks just add character IMO.

As for the strings, fingers with just a little bit of nail or a medium-strength nylon pick is all I'll take to them. I save all other picks for playing on "the dark side".

fwiw - when Kottke recorded Busted Bicycle I think he was still using picks but he later gave them up because of tendonitis or something. And believe it or not, Busted Bicycle is one of the "easier" Kottke tunes - it is played in open C and is very similar to Fahey's Sunflower River Waltz. It sounds pretty darn good on a 6 string and just roars on the 12

Yeah that one isn't incredibly hard but it just jams!! I believe he was using a thumbpick back then. He aquired carpel tunnel from the position he had to hold his hand in. Good record.
