I just LOVE it.

I received it last week and it plays like a dream. Great tone ! Its a D-03R lefty that I ordered online. Not something that I really wanted to do but the only Larrivee dealer around my place sells at a very high price. Mr Lucky got lucky !

It has great woods that are perfectly bookmatched back and front with the front having nice silking and even a few bearclaws.

Here are a few pics

NICE :thu:
I have so many good things about these guitars. I'm planing to get one myself. I'm looking @ L-03R & the model that you got. How is the neck feel? Is it a fast neck?:thu:

The neck profiles are similar but the fretboard on the L-03R will be 1/16" wider. Some day that the necks are too flat but I find them to be similar to my Strat's neck radius and a refreshing change from the modified oval neck of my Takamine.

How would you describe the tone of the D-03R? I'm considering one as well. Does it have a fair amount of bass -- not thundering like some Martins -- but enough to make it sound like a rosewood dread?

All of the larrivee dreads that I have played including the one that I own have been quite balanced in terms of bass. They have enough but it isn't too much. I've been experimenting with different guages of strings on it and I've concluded that you can get almost any sound out of it that you would expect from a dread. It isn't lacking in anything. I've really liked the mediums on it that I've tried, but I really like the John Pearce New Mediums. Great guitar.

I have an L-03 and it has excellent bass response.

I'm sure the bass response in the D series is great.

They make great guitars. I'm very pleased with my L-03.

Don't worry, resisting GAS gets easier over time! Larrivee makes some sweet and affordable guitars but I've been redirecting the GAS urge by focusing on my playing and compositional skills.

Someday soon, though! *crosses fingers*

(BTW, with me it's all about priorities and not so much a financial crisis. I just don't want to start digging myself into a financial or marital hole over my urges.)

The GAS thing is easy if I have a model in the size and style that fills an interest or sound I like. I do not have a nice dread so that is where I have to keep reminding myself of priorities and the fact that the whole reason to own guitars is to play the damn things not just acquire them. I can and need to wait having dug the marital hole already and trying to climb my sorry ass back out is a tough job.

For the "L" body style, I prefered the mahogany version. The neck feels great ! Fast neck ? That is a mystery to me...what is fast ? It has a slim neck and 1 11/16 nut width and a great fretboard...makes it "faster" than my 12 string with a 1.9" nut width.

The tone is great with a lot of sustain and overtones. Yes, it has a great bass but not overpowering. There is nothing muddy about the bass. The tone while strumming is quite even and clear with good sustain on the bass side. It is surprisingly great while fingerpickin.....the bass really shines with the sustain. I've been fingerpicking quite a bit on it and it is not my primary style. That has been the most pleasant surprise soundwise.

It came with the Cleartones.....I am happy with that as it used to come with Elixirs. It does state that it will take mediums but did you have to do anything with the nut ?

Reading all those Larrivee threads is what made me seek out a Larrivee and trying them out. I was floored by the workmanship, the quality of the woods and the tone when I did. I found them to be very consistent in every guitar that I listened to and played (being a lefty, I listened to a lot of right handed players in store). I felt confident to order online due to their consistency and was not deceived.

Sweet mrlucky7. Now, come on over to the larriveeforum & post some pics

I did ! I am Cminor on that forum

You're in denial !!! Resisting to GAS will give you ulcers :D I hear you sir ! I've waited quite a bit before indulging myself.....when you will be ready though, you will have researched quite a bit and ready to make to correct choice for you !

I chose the tortoise pickguard and like it better than the clear one. I still cant get over the quality of the workmanship and the woods used. Even the maple bindings have a quilted figure in them

I bought a D-50 from EM Shorts. It was a beautifully built and finished guitar. I was looking for a grasser and this particular guitar just did not cut it. It was bright, overly bright actually with very little bass response. The large soundhole may have been part of the problem since it tends to accentuate mids and attenuate bass. Luckily I had a 5-day return period so I was only out the shipping.

Perhaps with time it would have warmed up. I did not have the time or money to blow if that did not happen. I ended up with a D-18V and it is a spectacular sounding guitar. I would try a Larrivee again, just not going to buy an acoustic without playing it first. Unless a guitar is under 400 bucks I will not buy without playing in person.
