Members suprswd Posted March 19, 2006 Members Posted March 19, 2006 what is your favorite combination of guitar woods? i really want to try a cedar/brazillian rosewood guitar. damn.. what guitar wood combination would you guys say have the most mellow sound for fingerpicking? fire away!!
Members catdaddy Posted March 19, 2006 Members Posted March 19, 2006 In my experience Cedar tops are usually very responsive and have a more mellow tone in general than Spruce. For back and sides I'd have to go with east indian rosewood since I've never had the pleasure of experiencing Brazilian rosewood. Played a McPherson once that had the Cedar/EI Rosewood combo and it was heavenly for fingerstyle!
Members studyscoot Posted March 19, 2006 Members Posted March 19, 2006 for real now... for fingerpicking, I really prefer the string separation on cedar taylors. I really like the 514 and 714, with the only real difference being mahogany or rosewood. The taylor tone in cedar is perfect for this type of playing. If you are also including nylon string guitars, I would have to go with my old gut string cedar martin.
Members Electric Blues Posted March 19, 2006 Members Posted March 19, 2006 Fir Sitka solid top, rosewood sides and back, cedar neck and ebony fingerboard. LBenito, made in Chile.

Members tonedrops Posted March 19, 2006 Members Posted March 19, 2006 I think morningwood and ebony might be worth investigating.

Members lalatingstrings Posted March 20, 2006 Members Posted March 20, 2006 nylon :cedar and mahogony, steel:all koa.love the warmth and sweetness of the cedar and mahogony, love the depth and mellowness and versitility of the all koa.it's the only guitar i have found that does both fingerpicking and strumming well.

Members kindofblue79 Posted March 20, 2006 Members Posted March 20, 2006 For mellow sounding fingerpicking, I say go with a cedar top with mahogany back and sides.

Members SusanV Posted March 21, 2006 Members Posted March 21, 2006 favorite guitar woods....... I want a rosewood body/sides, with a cedar top. Taylor 714ce, please. I used to have a 714 with rosewood and engelman spruce and it had a gorgeous sound, but I think I'd prefer the warmer tone of a cedar top. gassssssssing.....
Members djsrc Posted March 21, 2006 Members Posted March 21, 2006 Please to tell me, (Usually said with a heavy Slavic accent) What is a Martin custom kit? Duh? Clonk! I've never even heard of it. Is that a kit where you can build your own Martin guitar? Really? How much is it? What kind of time frame, difficulty, etc.?

He's already built one (it's a beauty), and is working on his second.
