Members ArrMatey Posted April 2, 2006 Members Posted April 2, 2006 I was looking at ranges of cheaper guitars for start and both of these brands propose a good guitar for about 150 GBP. I know eko is an old italian company but I've heard some good things and wanted your opinion. Cheers Emre
Members mrlucky7 Posted April 2, 2006 Members Posted April 2, 2006 Never heard of Eko. Tanglewood are ok but I would try others : Alvarez, Yamaha and from the Godin line : Seagull, Simon & Patrick, Norman, Art & Lutherie. You can get a solid top at that price.

I'm not familiar with which Tanglewoods you've had the priviledge to play but most Tanglewoods are all solidwoods and sound very close to Martins in many respects. I'd stay away from the TW-28 and the new TD series though. These are all laminate Tanglewoods; don't sound too bad for all laminates, but all lamintates the same. I'd look into the TW-15 (sitka) or the TW-1000 (engelmann). Great instruments, those.

Very nice guitars that can be found reasonably too.

Members emergency_pants Posted April 3, 2006 Members Posted April 3, 2006 I bought the Tanglewood TW-145. I'm very happy with its sound and as a bonus, it looks lovely too. The build quality isn't what I expected - I've sent it back to get the pickup re-installed - but I must admit, I'm really missing not having it in the house. it arrives back today... yay!! The Simon & Patricks are quite expensive over here, it seems. If I had the extra money, I definitely would have seeked one out to test in a store. They get really good reviews, universally. If I were to do the whole buying process again, I might consoder spending a few quid more and buying locally, instead of online. If there any problems, it's easier to carry it to the store and talk face-to-face with someone about it. Cheers,Simon.
Members Ole Man Blues Posted April 3, 2006 Members Posted April 3, 2006 I purchased my first 12 string in 1967 it was an EKO. $185. Quite decent sound then. Not sure if the company is still in business..... OMB
