Members LouRed Posted April 7, 2006 Members Posted April 7, 2006 Hey guys, this is my first post in the Acoustics forum, and I played a beautiful resonator today, and got me GASsing all over resonators. I was thinking something more of a single cone rather than a tri-con (what's the difference anyway?) And i'm eyeing the dean, i wouldn't like to spend more than 500-600. Advise me please! TIA
Members daklander Posted April 7, 2006 Members Posted April 7, 2006 Liberty Guitars.Bill builds some very nice resonators at a great price point.
Members Freeman Keller Posted April 7, 2006 Members Posted April 7, 2006 Go find the "best value resonator" thread. Also do some searching in the archives - hot topic last year. And if you want me to find my "Resonators 101" article that I did last year it expains the differences (single cone has one, tri cone has, lets see, three cones....). The Beards have a great reputation for an "inexpensive" resonator - most of the asia imports that I've played have been pretty underwhelming, but can be a good introduction to these beasties. It would help a lot to know what you want to do with it - slide or fretted, lap or blues, plugged or not, street corner or living room - you know, the usual stuff.
Members LouRed Posted April 7, 2006 Author Members Posted April 7, 2006 Being a Knopfler freak, i'd guess fretted and unplugged... I'll look for the threads.
Members Freeman Keller Posted April 7, 2006 Members Posted April 7, 2006 If you are interested I did find some of my old notes - shoot me an e-mail addy if you are intersted. As I remember the album cover I think Mark played a Style O single cone...
Members LouRed Posted April 7, 2006 Author Members Posted April 7, 2006 old notes? yeah, thats his national resonator
Members Freeman Keller Posted April 7, 2006 Members Posted April 7, 2006 I don't pretend to be an expert on these things, but I do have a couple and play certain kinds of music on them (mostly Delta blues). Last year there was a lot of interest in inexpensive resonators so I wrote down the little bit I know about them - differences between spider and biscuit, brass and wood (I have examples of each). I called it "Resonator 101" - if nothing else it has a lot of links to other information. My local shop had several in stock so I went down one day and played them all. I had intended it to be A/B/C but it turned out to not be as good a comparison as I had hoped. Anyway, wrote that down too and e-mailed to a couple of forumites. Copies are available if you want. Might help
Members Terry Allan Hall Posted April 7, 2006 Members Posted April 7, 2006 I've got this Dean CE that I like a lot for spanish/bottleneck playing and a genuine late 30's Dobro for lap style and both are excellent instruments...I was VERY pleasently surprised at how nice the Dean is for such a reasonable price! If you're lusting after a metal-bodied reso, Dean makes a few of those, too, but I've never played one of those, so I can't comment of 'em. http://www.deanguitars.com/ce.htm
