Members MainzMan Posted April 11, 2006 Members Posted April 11, 2006 I recently saw some Martin silk and steel strings for a 12 string while browsing and wondered if anyone has tried them. I would expect them to give a mellower tone, would I be right?

Members Freeman Keller Posted April 11, 2006 Members Posted April 11, 2006 It has been a long time since I tried silk and steels on anything but I remember them being very mellow as TAH suggested and having very little volume. I would think that if you tune down they would be a bad choice because of the very low tension. Probably easy to barre, bad for slide. There is a guy on the AGF that swears by them on his 355. Since I hate changing strings on my 12 I like a light gauge coated string that last a couple of months, but we won't open that can of worms.... Try them and report back. Tell us what you were using before and how they compare.
Members Queequeg Posted April 11, 2006 Members Posted April 11, 2006 like I said before (and feel free to quote me in future threads on this subject @ no additional charge.) "Silk is for ladies underwear." silk guitar strings are terrible !

I'll let you know how I get on, might be a while as I'll wait until the current strings go off. I won't forget though
