Members Rico07 Posted April 10, 2006 Members Posted April 10, 2006 Hey all, I am new here. I plan to hang out for a while. From what I have read there is good info posted here! Any Vintage Martin experts out there?? I am thinking of selling My 1987 HD-28 P. It is in excellent condition. A few pick marks are all adn they are barely noticable, no buckle rash or cracks. The nut and Saddle are elephant ivory. Any idea what this one might be worth right now?? I think I am in the ball park but want an experts input. I got pictures of it. Jeannie
Members SuchAFan Posted April 10, 2006 Members Posted April 10, 2006 For a true value on a guitar, I really recommend George Gruhn in Nashville. He is the guru of guitars!!!
Members Freeman Keller Posted April 10, 2006 Members Posted April 10, 2006 Jeannie, the Martin experts hang out at the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum (UMGF) http://p082.ezboard.com/btheunofficialmartinguitarforum Their Buy and Sell would be the best place to list it as well as a good source for current value. A buyer will be really interested in the neck angle - when you post pictures of it include one that shows a straightedge pointing to the bridge and one that show the height of the strings above the 12th fret. My little sticky "Is your guitar sick" will show you how to do this. Other important issues are the lack of pickguard and key cracks - I would include a picture of those areas - as well as the normal wear and tear. 87 isn't normally considered "vintage" - that is really about 1970 and before but a yours should be a very good player and should be in demand. It is also about the time a Martin starts needing a neck reset - it will be to your advantage if it doesn't.
Members BrainChild Posted April 10, 2006 Members Posted April 10, 2006 Typically between $1600 to $1800, however without seeing or playing the guitar would be real hard to say.
Members rjoxyz Posted April 11, 2006 Members Posted April 11, 2006 Jeannie--Where were you when I needed you? I just picked up a new HD-28 at Eldery last Friday. Love it so far (after a 3 or 4 string change experiment). If you don't mind me asking, what motivates you to sell yours?

Members Rico07 Posted April 11, 2006 Author Members Posted April 11, 2006 Thanks for your input. helps me to know these things. The neck is perfect. The action is sweet on it. It is in excellent condition,The pickguard looks like it has been played but is not damaged in any way. Members Rico07 Posted April 11, 2006 Author Members Posted April 11, 2006 Oh that is too funny. I was just at Elderly last weekend!!! I has a blast in there. I played a LOT of guitars! What do you all think of the Gibson J-100?? Does anyone play one here? I took my LP in for a set-up. Actually, I am not all that keen on selling it. I met a guy who makes custom guitars the other day. I was smitten. I was thinkin, that would be some quick cash. Might be better to save up. Members Rico07 Posted April 11, 2006 Author Members Posted April 11, 2006 Oh I like to use DAddarios (spell check??) on my Martin.I would like to have a pick up in it. I do a lot of recording. Right now I have to mic it and that is a pain. You can't make any noise. Another reason why I was thinking to sell rather that modify it in any way. I can put one in and let the Jack hang outside, but wonder if it will interfere with my playing. Originally posted by Rico07 Oh that is too funny. I was just at Elderly last weekend!!! Members Ole Man Blues Posted April 11, 2006 Members Posted April 11, 2006 I have just returned from a local Guitar store and I found a HD-28 that just "sings". I have played many D-28 over the years but nothing has ever come close to this one. I swore I would not own one because I found not what all the hype was about..... NOW I KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! $2200..... Sweet Jesus help me. I'll either be divorced or dead by tomorrow if I buy this instrument, and if I don't I will never rest or sleep again............ I've got to get a grip......................................................................................................................... Now that I have ranted why don't I feel better??????
Members rjoxyz Posted April 11, 2006 Members Posted April 11, 2006 Mr. Blues--Where did you find that HD-28? I live in the Detroit metro area like you and had to go to Elderly in Lansing to find a decent selection. Don't worry, I will not steal your mistress away as I bought my own last week.
