Members johnkline Posted April 18, 2006 Members Posted April 18, 2006 Yesterday when I tried out a new j-45 it had a pre-amp controller. And I've found one gibson online dealer that say's all new 2006 models come with built-in preamp. I'm not sure I like this? http://www.fqms.com/Gibson_C1918.cfm john
Members knockwood Posted April 18, 2006 Members Posted April 18, 2006 Kind of irritating. I don't have much use for electronics at all. There're a few Gibson models I really like and would consider... But I hate to think I'd need to place custom orders just to get them without wires.
Members Andrewrg Posted April 18, 2006 Members Posted April 18, 2006 Lucky I got my 2005 SJ200 and J185 when I did! I prefer to put my own electrics in if I need to.
Members da mayor Posted April 18, 2006 Members Posted April 18, 2006 I don't think this is all that new. Both of my Gibson's, one made in 97, the other in 2002, came with the Fishman ust. Although I bought both of them used, my understanding was/is that they came from the factory that way. I just had it removed from the J45. The wires were loose and rattling and I don't play amplified anyway. I figure if I ever want electronics I'll have a K& K Pure Western installed. Not that big a deal. As long as they don't go poking holes in the side.
Members johnkline Posted April 19, 2006 Author Members Posted April 19, 2006 I'm talking about the preamp box flush mounted on the side of the guitar...
Members Cldplytkmn Posted April 19, 2006 Members Posted April 19, 2006 surely you can order them without... i'm just glad they left the advance jumbo alone.
Members Gretsch Fan Posted April 19, 2006 Members Posted April 19, 2006 Why do this mod in advance? Surely they are passing the cost along. Maybe they get a really good profit margin in the supposed upgrade they are putting in... I do not like that at all.
Members knockwood Posted April 19, 2006 Members Posted April 19, 2006 I had a friend once who bought a J-45 with a preamp. He was playing his git in central park one day, and he fell asleep and was gnawed to death by squirrels. Moral of the story: Germans love David Hasselhoff.

Members da mayor Posted April 19, 2006 Members Posted April 19, 2006 I'm talking about the preamp box flush mounted on the side of the guitar... I know you were. But, when I checked out your link, it doesn't say anything about preamps, it only says that all core Gibson's come with an active pickup. I didn't check out every model on the site, but the ones I did check out either listed a Fishman active pickup or just a bridge mounted active pickup (no brand). So then I checked out the Gibson site. Some models are listed as having an active transducer, others an active pickup, others with an active preamp (sometimes referring to an active preamp and active pickup in the description of the same guitar) and a few others (e.g LC2 Sonoma) with an onboard preamp. Gibson's notorious inconsistency strikes again. Now, honestly, I know nothing about the electronics side of acoustic guitars, so maybe built-in preamp is the same as a bridge mounted active pickup, but I suspect not. Maybe you can enlighten me. And, I'm not trying to be argumentative, just think there's a bit more to this than Gibson cutting holes in the sides of all of their acoustics. Then again, I could be wrong, it certainly won't be the first time.

I dont think Gibson are cutting holes in their guitars. The Fishman active preamp is built into an extension of the endpin jack and is invisible inside the guitar.

I didn't either and that's what I was getting at in my usual long-winded roundabout way. Leave it to you to cut to the chase. With some exceptions, most Gibson's have come this way for some time.
Members johnkline Posted April 20, 2006 Author Members Posted April 20, 2006 I was just suprised when at wilcutt's in lexington I asked to look at a new gibson j-45 and it had the pickup with built in preamp installed. They told me it's the standard model. There does seem to be some confusion on new models having a pickup, and/or pickup-preamp. On a side note I just bought a Gibson J-45 Rosewood, I cannot freaking wait for it to get here! John
Members blackmonday Posted April 20, 2006 Members Posted April 20, 2006 Yeah I just got a brand new J-45 a month or so ago and it has a built in pickup, but there aren't any controls for it, it's just an endpin jack.

John: Hey man, congratulations on the new git, your gonna love it. I own a 97' J45, mahogony, and a couple of other guitars, including one that's much more expensive. The J45 is by far the one I play most often. Well, that and a Guild OM I'm keeping at the office for practice at lunch.
