Members Chirpy_72 Posted May 1, 2006 Members Posted May 1, 2006 I've been looking to pick up a decent beater for a while now. The local shop has a mid 70's Guild D25 that's pretty beat, but the neck is straight and she plays and sounds great. Hanging right next to her was a 2005 Taylor 414CE Fall Ltd ( Indian Rosewood back and sides instead of Ovagakal ) I'll be damned if I didn't walk out of the store with the friggin' Taylor .... and I'm a Martin guy ! I have to say, it's a great playing/sound fingerstyle and light strumming guitar ... looks great too. The expression system sounds pretty good too.Now I'm still a Martin guy and nothing will ever replace my D41 ... but I guess this is a good backup, and a nice for a change-of-pace.
Members Highway_61 Posted May 1, 2006 Members Posted May 1, 2006 Hey, Scottsdale, So, when you say the local guitar store, are you saying GC or Guitar Gallery or Cave Creek?
Members Tony Burns Posted May 1, 2006 Members Posted May 1, 2006 Id be the guy who would walk out with a Guild - but as I recall, they had a mahogany soundboard and werent my cup of tea at the time of the seventies ( think they also made some of them in spruce- not sure ? ) they were the guild starter guitar - always though for a few more bucks the D-40 was alot better guitar - though if i ever found a good D-25 ( now adays ) reasonable Id buy it . So how do you like your new taylor ? - i kinda know what you went threw, last year when i went for a larrivee and came home with a Martin. Must be some kinda bug thats going around .

Well it's "kinda" local ... TJ's Music in Chandler. Great shop ... VERY interesting gear ( vintage Gibson & Fender ... Dr Z, Takamine & Guild dealer ) TJ's a really great guy too. Cave Creek has some real nice acoustic gear. Got my D41 there a few years back. Paul certainly runs a good shop.

Who knows, I may end up getting it if it sticks around until my tax return comes in.

The sound is so different from any of the Martins I've ever had ( and I've had a few ). It's incredibly balanced across the whole register. Playing it is almost surgical .. it's so precise. The Expression system is good, but not that much better than the Martin Thinline Gold+ ( UST ) that I currently have on my Martin. The sound is very modern
Members eyeball987 Posted May 1, 2006 Members Posted May 1, 2006 I had one of those 414-RCE's. I loved it. I had to sell due to a divorce and I am still very bitter about it.
Members kwakatak Posted May 1, 2006 Members Posted May 1, 2006 When I read that you bought a "beater" I have to admit that neither Guild nor Taylor would be discussed. They're a little pricey to be considered "beaters" IMO, but hey diff'rnt strokes for diff'rnt folks.

The Guild was pre-beat ( ie: it's just a few pick scratches away from being Willie Nelson's guitar ) and it was a smidge less than $500.The Taylor is definitely NOT a beater since it is in PRISTINE condition and considerably more expensive.

It reminds me of the guy that bought a new Larrivee L-03R as his beach / campfire guitar.Chirpy,Congrats on the Taylor. I hear good things about the 400 Series. Now the 310 model? That's a different story.
Members kwakatak Posted May 1, 2006 Members Posted May 1, 2006 Well, you must have got a good one. Most of the Taylors I've seen in my local Guitar Center I would classify as "beaters" with the lumps to show for it.
Members studyscoot Posted May 1, 2006 Members Posted May 1, 2006 there's something about that 400 series that stands out from the regular taylor line. Maybe next weekend I'll have time to check out that shop up in cave creek
Members guit30 Posted May 2, 2006 Members Posted May 2, 2006 People who buy 05 Taylor 414s for beaters have big bucks
Members Chirpy_72 Posted May 2, 2006 Author Members Posted May 2, 2006 Originally posted by guit30 People who buy 05 Taylor 414s for beaters have big bucks I wish. No I justified it's purchase since I didn't spend any cash all winter ( in fear that when I did my taxes I'd end up owing ... fortunately that wasn't the case )
Members smokiee Posted May 2, 2006 Members Posted May 2, 2006 i have this "kapok" brand made in china.. laminated wood and sounds like crap! the soundhole is full of spiderwebs and guitar picks and other stuff. now thats a beater guitar hehee.
Members riffmeister Posted May 2, 2006 Members Posted May 2, 2006 chirpy, good choice. now you have one of each.
Members daklander Posted May 2, 2006 Members Posted May 2, 2006 Originally posted by smokiee i have this "kapok" brand made in china.. laminated wood and sounds like crap! the soundhole is full of spiderwebs and guitar picks and other stuff. now thats a beater guitar hehee. I better look in the closet. That sounds like one of mine.
Members kwakatak Posted May 2, 2006 Members Posted May 2, 2006 Yeah, a 414 ain't a beater; a Taylor Big Baby is. Honestly, it sounds like you bought another good guitar and are still in the market for a beater!
Members t60 fan Posted May 2, 2006 Members Posted May 2, 2006 Sounds like a good score. I like Taylor's limiteds in particular.
Members guit30 Posted May 2, 2006 Members Posted May 2, 2006 I played a Taylor 410 and loved the sound, there is something about the Taylor 400 series
Members kwakatak Posted May 2, 2006 Members Posted May 2, 2006 OK - I'm gonna make myself into a hypocrite but it was an Ovangkul Taylor 414CE that originally stoked my GAS fires a couple of years back and damned if I didn't like the 314 and 214 too! There, I said it - I'm a closet Taylor freak! Of course, once I played a Larrivee I knew that they were just plain better!
Members guit30 Posted May 2, 2006 Members Posted May 2, 2006 Love 214's, almost in my price range, but I'm lovin' my Alvarez now
Members Tony Burns Posted May 2, 2006 Members Posted May 2, 2006 who's to judge whats a great guitar and whats a beater , whats a beater to you might be a fine instrument to me - i learned that when i was 16 when i though i was hot stuff because i had a tele and a friend had a 30 dollar heit ( cheap japanese guitar ) but he could play the crumbs out of it , so a t that point in my life i realized its the guitar player not the guitar - but i do like nice stuff- My beater is my Dick Boak Dreadnaught - its one of his early guitars ! - hes a really nice guy thou, i hope this doesnt hurt his feelings !
