Members Hudman Posted May 10, 2006 Members Posted May 10, 2006 Kwak, Thanks for the Tommy Emmanuel tab. The Gadd9 chord is going to give me carpal tunnel! It's a big stretch for my hands. My pinky can't quite reach the 5th fret in the Gadd9 chord, but it gets close enough to get the G note. Cool stuff.
Members kwakatak Posted May 10, 2006 Members Posted May 10, 2006 This was in that other thread by knockwood, but to keep the thread on-topic I'll repeat it here: Originally posted by Hudman Kwak, Thanks for the Tommy Emmanuel tab. The Gadd9 chord is going to give me carpal tunnel! Are you talking about that chord in "Those Who Wait"? The Fmaj13 always gave me trouble so I "fake it" on that one. I use my thumb for the bass note and don't attempt to play all the notes. As long as I don't buzz any notes I'm happy! As for the rest of the chord changes in the intro, it does take lots of practice. For the chord you're having trouble with, I don't use the thumb like I do on the F6add9 right before it so I have to reshift my whole hand while keeping the index and middle fingers firmly planted to keep their notes ringing. Here's the fingering I use for those two chords: The real trick is keeping that D note ringing on the second string while shifting between the two chords. That takes real work and yes, it is tough on the wrist. Hope that helps!
Members kwakatak Posted May 10, 2006 Members Posted May 10, 2006 BTW - here's an MP3 of me playing it. This is an old one from last year on my Tak. I suppose I should update it since I'm better equipped now! "Those Who Wait" FWIW, the Tak's low end really helped with the dropped D tuning, a new set of John Pearse PB lights gave it a nice jangly tone and a little reverb in Audacity helped make it sound better than it actually is. I still woodshed on this song and the Larrivee OM-03R seems to be a bit more forgiving.
Members Hudman Posted May 10, 2006 Author Members Posted May 10, 2006 Kwak,My hands are too small to hit the G note on the low D string in the Gadd9 chord. I play the chord with the root coming from the G note on the "high" D string. It doesn't sound as full, but it's close. Like you, I use my thumb on the F note in the F6add9 chord. I think I may fool around with this tune in a higher key with a capo on the 2nd or 3rd fret. That way I can get that Gadd9 chord shape.
