Members Hudman Posted May 19, 2006 Members Posted May 19, 2006 I never got into naming guitars, vehicles or any other inaniment objects.
Members Queequeg Posted May 19, 2006 Members Posted May 19, 2006 "Trigger" unless that one's taken already. Oh; and I have a car named Rusty and a dog named Blue. I once won the Mr Originality contest. OK, I came in third.
Members kwakatak Posted May 19, 2006 Members Posted May 19, 2006 I don't really name my guitars, but I'm a sap like that with cars. My first car was Betsy. The one I just sold to fund a GAS purchase was named Andy. When I'm broke down on the side of the road I like to know what to yell at it, even if it's an inanimate object! FWIW, Andy was a good car but Betsy often left me stranded in BFE and taught me to keep lots of jugs of coolant and jumper cables on hand!

I've always thought it would be cool to have names for my guitars, but at the same time I've always felt it had to be something that came about naturally rather than sitting down and trying to come up with names. So far the inspiration hasn't struck me, so I guess it's gonna continue to be "the Martin" or "the Gallagher", unless I get an Esteban some day and say to one of my sons, "hey, hand me old Crappy over there." I generally associate naming more with electric players for some reason, although Doc Watson named his first Gallagher "Old Hoss", and his second "Donald" (after Don Gallagher). I wonder if Segovia had a name for his guitar?
Members Queequeg Posted May 19, 2006 Members Posted May 19, 2006 damn that Willie Nelson, any way! stealing my guitar's name like that!Segovia's guitar was named "Chi Chi Ol
Members Michael Martin Posted May 19, 2006 Members Posted May 19, 2006 My Hummingbird is "the Bird". My Applause AA12 travel guitar is "Buttercup" (named by my daughter). I guess I still need names for my Takamine AE and for my 12-string Takamine F395. Maybe I'll name them after we've formed a deeper, more enduring relationship.
Members oorion1 Posted May 19, 2006 Members Posted May 19, 2006 Hey DonK If you ever see an Esteban destroy it.Don't ever hand over an Esteban to your son. Could result in a trip to the ER. My neighbor got one as a "gift" for Christmas from his wife (she must want to collect life ins. or something). He proudly brought it over for me to see, and to tell me what a great deal his wife got. I think his point was to show me how stupid I was to pay over $1000 for guitars, when I could have an Estaban. Well the frets stuck out beyond the neck about 1/4 in. and were sharp as my Shick razor. The bridge was lifting off the body, and don't even ask about smell coming from the sound hole.... Something must have died in it on it's long journey from a sweat shop in China. The finish was sticky and runny in places. What a death trap. The "wood" was vintage ratwood.. Not much better than compressed toilet paper. I saw his Esteban on trash day last week, the neck sticking out sadly out of his trash can waiting for burial. Ready to join the thousands of other "great deal" Estebans at our local land fill.
Members kwakatak Posted May 19, 2006 Members Posted May 19, 2006 Well, upon further reflection I don't have a name associated to any of my guitars but a couple seem to have a vibe of their own that cry out for a descriptive nickname. My Takamine is my "Geisha", a faithful companion of many years who started its existence in a faraway land and has to comforted me during many quiet lonely times. My Larrivee is my new mistress who has the exciting allure of newness and sexiness without being overly gaudy. Its touch, voice, feel and aroma are casting its spell on me with each passing day. My Kay is like and old woman with gnarled fingers whose voice barks out clear and strong and stubbornly will not bow to the pressures of the years, the abuse of my son or the allure of my other guitars. My electrics don't seem to have the same vibe, though each also have sentimental value. My Kramer has that deep blue color of the ocean that reminds me of that period of my life when I first bought it while serving in the Navy. Also, It may be my imagination but I feel as if the color of my Strat's natural ash finish has darkened over its years, marking its gradual transition toward becoming an heirloom in its own right.
Members BenAlex Posted May 19, 2006 Members Posted May 19, 2006 its already named why bother. Maybe only abbreviate for comfort.

Members 6942 Posted May 20, 2006 Members Posted May 20, 2006 My guitars, all have the same name. When I F-UP, when playing, I usually yell at the guitar: "You F*ckin'-piece-of-SH*T"! I have 7 guitars, and the ALL, have the same name! Question: Isn't 7, supposed to be a lucky number?
Members Sweb Posted May 20, 2006 Members Posted May 20, 2006 Sebastian. That's the name Noel Stookey named the 12 string he used to record Wedding Song. He also recorded a song about the guitar itself called, aptly enough, Sebastian. Chorus - "Sing sweet Sebastian. Sing the sweetest song. Sing so sweet that while you sleep, you're melody lingers on." Guy had it bad. I don't name my guitars. But, I do call them things - P.O.S, etc. - when they won't play what my fingers think they're playing.

Members smokiee Posted May 22, 2006 Author Members Posted May 22, 2006 most people have a relationship with their guitars.. like with pets, you name your pets so... why not name your guitars? if you call your guitar "martin" there's probably thousands upon thousands of martins out there... but if its called "chumbakwa" or "diddlebun".... anyways.. this was just a survey.. not saying that not naming your git you're a lesser player or by naming it you're a loon.. just wondering. my car was "dude" a few months ago now he's "chicken sh*t"
Members nylon rock Posted May 22, 2006 Members Posted May 22, 2006 Originally posted by smokiee if you call your guitar "martin" there's probably thousands upon thousands of martins out there... I guess I'll change my guitar's name to Martini, because I think I play better after one, and they therefore go hand in hand, though I can only fret a few notes like that. And also, I always liked the way Jimmy Stewart called his banking-client/bartender-friend Martini (instead of Mr. Martini) in It's a Wonderful Life, at least until "Clarence" got into messing things up, and inexplicably Martini wasn't running his bar any more and George Bailey had to deal with the likes of Nick: "Hey look, mister - we serve hard drinks in here for men who want to get drunk fast, and we don't need any characters around to give the joint "atmosphere". Is that clear, or do I have to slip you my left for a convincer? [slamming a bottle on the bar] "That's it. Out you two pixies go - through the door, or out the window."
Members tamolina Posted May 23, 2006 Members Posted May 23, 2006 I call my Washboard WD56SW "Vicky" after Batman's girlfriend because I think the bridge looks more like a bat than the butterfly it is supposed to be. Glad to see there are a couple of Washburn fanciers on here.
Members Soapy Posted May 23, 2006 Members Posted May 23, 2006 I tend to put too much sentimental value on my guitars, so I avoid naming them. I try to look at a guitar as a tool. That's why people call it their axe. I never play out with the guitar my mother bought me on layaway when I was 12 because I'm afraid of something happening to it. Intelectually, I think that is silly. I like the guitar and guitars are meant to be played. What good is it sitting in my house. Better to play it in 100 gigs and have it stolen than have it forever but rarely played. Still, my emotions won't let me. Silly me.
Members marshallspaul Posted May 23, 2006 Members Posted May 23, 2006 "Marty" is the name that stuck with my d-35 but usually i call my guitars "baby" but the phrase "Hey Baby come to daddy!" just doesn't sound that great w/ "Marty" in its place
