Members Ray18 Posted May 26, 2006 Members Posted May 26, 2006 he should buy a piano, then he'd look not so special
Members JasmineTea Posted May 26, 2006 Members Posted May 26, 2006 Originally posted by Ray18 he should buy a piano, then he'd look not so special It's easier to play fast on a piano than guitar. I thought it was great.
Members JasmineTea Posted May 26, 2006 Members Posted May 26, 2006 min7b5, you ever try silk and steel? I imagine it's easier to play fast with them. Where do these guys get all the energy? criminies.
Members min7b5 Posted May 26, 2006 Author Members Posted May 26, 2006 I have used silk and steel, it's been probably ten years though. I remember not liking the tone. And I have no desire to play that fast, I'll let these guys do it, I'll just get a kick out of watching.

Members min7b5 Posted May 26, 2006 Author Members Posted May 26, 2006 I guess I would rather hear BB too, but this is fun, and kinda cool. This sort of poses in interesting debate. I

Members min7b5 Posted May 26, 2006 Author Members Posted May 26, 2006 Cool. Yeah, I think the really fast Chet thing grates on me after a while, like the gypsy thing does for you ( the gypsy things gets to me too after a while), but it's very cool for sure. As for fitting the tune, I guess it depends if you know the tune. I know that Django tune really well, so I feel like I can hear something of that theme, or a list changes through most of it.
Members bjorn-fjord Posted May 26, 2006 Members Posted May 26, 2006 I find that this type of playing, while jaw-droppingly impressive, exceeds the limitations of the acoustic guitar. That type of super fast picking doesn't allow the notes to "ring" at all and the strings are just not transmitting enough energy to the top. It sounds insipid. Like the guitar is being choked.
Members JasmineTea Posted May 26, 2006 Members Posted May 26, 2006 I don't remember who they were, but I heard two guys with nylon string guitars that were much faster than these gypsy guys. I don't idolize anyone, but if I did it would be Django. So I guess even though these guys are a little over the top, I can still appreciate the effort.

I don't like the music.
Members egtact Posted May 26, 2006 Members Posted May 26, 2006 "To many notes"? "Slow it down"? My, what "open minds" you have... Birelli is just as amazing as a Bluegrass mandolin ripper IMHO. Amateurs like me can only dream of that kind of talent.

Members egtact Posted May 26, 2006 Members Posted May 26, 2006 Affirmative on the ear thing there. I can only take this stuff in small doses myself. But to listen to all the undertones and back melodies regardless of the speed of the lead lines... just awes me. And you know I was just teasing about the "open mind" thing.
Members bigmo66 Posted May 26, 2006 Members Posted May 26, 2006 I consider that type of music Django Reinhardt style or Gypsy Jazz. I like the melody of Django better and he did it with 2 fingers!
Members fingerpicker Posted May 27, 2006 Members Posted May 27, 2006 I think it's great. The tempo is appropriate for that piece. I am surprised everyone here is so critical actually....There is another clip of him playing with John McClauglin that is slower and more soulful, so obviously the guy isn't just a speedster. Damn I wish I can play that fast!!I bet you do too!

It's not my thang..... Hey! I like your signature....
